Thank you all for the responses!!!
I think I like keeping them in the 9pocket pages, for ease of looking through. Which brings up another question...do you guys with the cards in boxes ever look through them and see what you have? Seems hard to enjoy the cards if they just sit in a box all the time.

I don't need to look through them honestly. I know what I have. And I have over 500 pictures on Photobucket of each of my Orakpo cards that I do have (click the link I left in my earlier post if you haven't already). Plus each time I get more cards of him I have to put them where they belong in the box based on my organization system, so I can always look at them during that time too. I like the box system way better than pocket pages. I had those when I was young but once I switched to boxes I never looked back.

FWIW Here's a video I made a while ago showing how I store my Olerud PC.

Nice video. The only question I have is how do you fit thicker cards in a basic ultra pro sleeve without damaging a corner? I sometimes use the thick cards sleeves which are wider and easier to fit larger stock cards in. Or I cut the corner off of a basic sleeve which makes thicker cards fit in much easier.

how do you know where to leave spaces to be able to fill in other cards? That seems like a ton of research...I'm guessing through Beckett, but I don't think I have time for that. Is there an easier solution I may be missing?

It took a fair amount of research and time initially, but I found it to be well worth the effort. Just make sure to leave a few extra spaces more than you would need. Don't let years run into each other on the same page, either, even if you only have one card on a page.

I had this built for my collection. Each row is 24" deep and is wide enough for toploaders. I sort by year/set/subset for base and inserts, with game used, autos and 1/1's stored in their own rows. Makes it easy to search to see if I have a card and be able to view my collection as I have time.

I keep my Sandy Alomar Jr. cards in a binder. I put them in as I get them, so they are not terribly well-organized. But I like it like this. I keep a list of what I have that is organized and a list of what I still need that is as complete as I can get. I know it is not the most sophisticated method of storing cards, but it works well for me.

I could never bring myself to put my stuff in binders. I'd live to so I could easily look through it, but not with how expensive some of these cards are. Plus, I would have to but special pages for the gu stuff. Too much of a hassle.

I have to admit I like the OP's keeping them in order of when he gets them rather than the usual year/set/insert plan. It sounds...comforting.

Years ago I used to store my cards in sleeves and toploaders but about 3 years ago I began to move them to binders and sheets. This way I can view them easier and I'll leave openings for needed cards. I keep more expensive, GU, thicker inserts, autos in toploads and magnetics. Here's a video of my binder set up:

My cards are all basically without value, so anything that fits in a sheet goes in a binder. Nothing is kept out of the sheets because of "value". I leave spaces for what I'm missing, inserting pages and shuffling cards around when necessary. Thick cards that don't fit in sheets, and really have no business being so thick, just annoy me. They usually just get left in whatever holder they were shipped. I have a separate album for oversize stuff that requires sheets with larger pockets and 8x10s. My Winfield collection is currently broken up into four albums, 1974-1989, 1990-1995 and a large 1996-current, plus the album of oversize stuff.

If I didn't keep them in albums, I'd never look at them. The few cards that don't fit in album pages never get looked at and just sit on a shelf somewhere for now.

Thanks guys! Now when my wife says I worry about my cards too much, i'll have her check out this thread to prove I'm a very casual collector.
