I am sure other player collectors have had to deal with this so I would like your opinion and insight to the matter. This is the first year for Chavez to have a Rip Card. So my question is how important is it to get an unripped version?

The Chavez is /99 and each is going for $50-$55 while I am sure a Ripped version will go for $5-$10. Is it worth the extra $40 to you to get a "mint" version? I am having a lot of trouble buying a card /99 for such a steep price.

Do you consider having a ripped version having the card?

Is it worth paying $40+ for the inside card that you will never see?

All opinions welcome

I think most people are now conscious of the fact that player
collectors are willing to buy the ripped versions, and are making
more of an effort to keep them in good shape.

If Dawson had a rip card, I would gladly buy the ripped version for 1/10th
of the un-ripped price.

You can also buy the unripped version and carefully rip it the way you want so you can still have a good looking ripped card. Sell the mini to make back some of the cash you lost. Might be an alternative to trying to find a ripped version that is still in good shape

I have a ripped version of Bay from 2008. it was ripped very clean and it looks fine from the front. I agree I would never pay $40 more for a card /99.

EDIT: I paid $8 delivered for mine.

This is the way to go. If there's an auto /10 or a wood 1/1 of a player you don't care about, you flip it for more Chavez. Most of the mini parallels get 20-25 at minimum, so you wouldn't actually pay 50 for the card.

Hmmmm....I am in a HUGE minority here LOL. I would rather have the unripped version....mainly because I have a huge issue with condition....if money was never an object I would have all my Thome cards graded, but that is pricey because I dont have 15K to do so, lol

Personally I would only get an unripped version if it was a really good deal. I can live with a ripped version since it is the card on the checklist that counts.

That being said, I have an unopened $3.00 can of 1998 Pinnacle Inside with Gwynn on it that I am dying to open but cant bring myself to!

Gwynn is so small scale!!

Both of my Andruw's are ripped, but they are in good shape. I passed on a few that had the whole back ripped off. I would prefer the unripped version, but to be honest, it is still the same card either way. I personally think I would be too tempted to rip the card when I got bored one day, so it more than likely wouldn't stay unripped forever unless I got it slabbed. Even then I may be tempted. :)

Thanks guys for the input, I decided that if the snipe that I set for an auction that ended a few minutes ago didn't win the item (which is didn't) I am going to stick with an already ripped copy.

Thanks again!

I bought the ripped version of Rowand because I didn't want to pay extra for the card inside. From the front you can't even tell that it's been ripped.

If I buy a ripped rip card I would ask for a scan of the back.I dont see the reason for a player collector to buy an unripped version unless you can get it for a reasonable price.

In my 4 boxes yesterday, I pulled a Victorino Rip card /99. They go for $60ish unripped so I listed it and will eventually pick up the ripped version for much cheaper once one comes up. I don't care about the difference and will take the extra money to buy more cards I need.

I would go after the the un ripped version. This is one of those sets that will likly be around for a great while. Also the unripped versions are cards that become rarer and rare each day. So there may be 99 copies but in 5 years there may only be 10 unripped copies in existence. Assuming that you are not buying for profit and you can get one for $50, you can hardly go wrong.

In the end, if ryan had a rip card I would probably own the ripped version since the unripped would be waaaaaaaaaaaaay out of my price range, but I would go after both and consider them a variation.

I went for unripped. I think it's really cool knowing that there are still some cards (possibly valuable ones) entombed inside. It adds a not just monetary value to them.

If Mark Grace ever has one, I'll only want UNripped ones. That's how it was isssued, that's what the card is supposed to be. Anything done to it is damage in my opinion.

The first time collectors faced this dilemma was with 1998 Zenith Dare to Tear. I only wanted unripped of those too for my PC.

I have an unripped 2006 Allen & Ginter Cap Anson for my small Anson collection that I won't be ripping any time soon. But it is fun to wonder what's inside.
