I would scan the backs only if it's rare or oddball card that people might want more info on. Some cards are differentiated by their backs, like Playoff Portraits from (I think) 2003 had the autos and G/U swatches on the back, and the early 1990's Donruss INC./INC variations. They could be scanned front and back.

But nobody needs to see the backs of every base card and common IMHO.

I scan the fronts and backs of all cards, except for cameos (only scan the side Burks is on.) I'm a little OCD when it comes to scanning/displaying/organizing my collections. :)

I scan both front and back. It's a lot of work up front, since you have to go back and scan every card (some 500 when I decided to scan backs), but once you get that out of the way, it's really not much more work to add an extra scan for new pickups. Having scans of front and back is incredibly convenient, since if you ever want to check something about a card (serial numbering, see if it might be a variation, etc.), you don't have to go digging through boxes of cards.

If you don't scan the backs you'll regret it later.

I did over 2500 card scans earlier this year so that I could redo my website with all individual front scans... I also scanned the 2500 backs and if I can ever figure out how to code my site that you can click the card to see front or back I will upload all of them as well. It was a ton of work but well worth it because it also helps me reference quickly my collection online while I'm at card shows.

I've scanned probably 40,000 cards, front and back, so it's just routine for me. About the only backs I don't scan are if the backs in a set are all identical or blank.

Since you are just starting out, i would do front and back. theres been times where i wish i had scanned the backs of some cards cuz thats where the difference would be (98 pinnacle, coll choice stickums). Someday I may do all my backs. But like 1st4040, I would want my site to have the click to see back option, and using jalbum doesnt allow that. I could probably make a mirror site with nothing but backs, but that would be a ton of work.

And don't just scan them front & back, scan them in fairly high quality. You can always resize an image down, but you can't make a small image any bigger without massive loss of quality.

I agree with the rest - scan both sides. I'm giving serious thought to re-scanning my entire Butler collection. When I did it the first time, I resized the original image to the size of each card and saved over the original file. In hindsight I wish I hadn't done that. I now want to show them off in larger size with better resolution, but shot myself in the foot by not doing a "save as" as opposed to "save".
