Today on http://therion.today.com I focus on one of two pitchers from the 70s that could hit 100 MPH with his fastball. Today I introduce you to Vida Blue.

Not as obscure as others I've featured but he is quickly fading into obscurity.

Another nice blog Billy. By the way, what was the winning name for your blog??

For the interviews? "Batter Up: (Player Name)"

It was simple. I liked it.

Vida Blue is one of three pitchers to record 300 strikeouts in a season and not lead the league.

1971: Blue 301 Ks, Mickey Lolich had 308. This was the only time either of them recorded 300 Ks in a season.

1997: Pedro Martinez 305 Ks, Curt Schilling 319 Ks. Incidentally this season was the closest Roger Clemens ever came to 300 Ks in a season, with 292. Randy Johnson had 291 Ks as well. 4 pitchers with over 1200 Ks!!!

2002: Curt Schilling 316 Ks, Randy Johnson 334 Ks. Obviously, the 316 Ks is the most in a season to not lead the league.

I actually have a couple of full-sized replica signed batting helmets of Vida (one was a birthday group gift). I also have a few cards in my Louisiana PC.

What inspired your Louisiana collection? Just curious.

I grew up watching the Shreveport Captains.

Great read again. I didn't know much about Vida, now I do.

And that's my goal :) Glad I'm teaching some people about forgotten players.

Now I just need to come up with a banner for my blog :? :? :?

I was fortunate enough to just pull these from a pack (or two) of 1975 mini's from BBCE.

The Vida is a really nice looking card.

Thanks for bringing up players not as often talked about!

Well at least he still attends the shows here and signs.I am very happy to have met and talked to him.I was able to get him to sign a ball for me as well.Obscure = J.R. Richards. He actually did a signing a few months back but he has been out of the loop for a while from what I have heard.
