Players that sell surprisingly well

We've discussed underrated or under priced players or cards before. Here's the opposite of that discussion. Who is out there that had an average (or worse) career, fizzled out, or never did anything special yet still sells at higher than expected prices?

My answer is Damon Stoudamire. He was the first player collection that I started. I was looking through my collection the other day and saw some awesome inserts and really well designed cards, so I decided to pick up the collection again. I never would have expected his cards to sell as well as they do. Non numbered autos can sell as low as $15 and even much higher. His patch cards and low numbered inserts sell pretty well too. Granted Stoudamire was good for a while, but after getting into some trouble in Portland and bouncing around to the Spurs and Grizzlies I didn't think he'd have as big a following.

I feel like he is similar to Stoudamire, but Penny has a more well known name. Both started off their careers strong and then you ended up forgetting they were still in the league near the end of the careers.

Damon Stoudamire sells well? Nice. I have a pretty decent sized collection of 90's inserts of him. I used to collect him as a kid when I collected basketball.

Im not sure he fits the bill but I want to say Latrell Spreewell. The problem is he was better than avarage but he did fizzle out after the "Cant feed my family" thing and his cards do sell well.

Alonzo Mourning. He had a great career that was cut short do to injury/illness.

For a big man his following is amazing. Highend autos and patches sell for an insane amount

He only has like 18 cards and almost all are base/inserts besides his 06 sterling plates.

That's what I noticed when I did a search for him. I guess I'll wait and hope for a nice patch or auto. The kid can play if he gets an opportunity.

Even though they've already been said, the first that immediately came to mind were Penny and Latrell. Grant Hill also sells well.

David Robinson, Yao Ming, Larry Bird. Obviously the autographs sell well ,but random stuff sells for crazy prices sometimes.

Oopz, I didn't read the original question. I just listed these guys because their inserts, patches, and oddball cards pull big money. Compared to other popular players.

Wow. I wonder how much is the 90's insert craze and how much is the player.

Steve "the Franchise" Francis :lol: ... I read some news about him a few year's back (might have been last year, I'm not really sure as this was just a blip) of the rumor that he was coming back to Houston, so I decided to go buy up some of his SPX rc's & other nice auto'ed stuff.....that is before I see that they were selling for WAY more than I'd pay for a player whom "fizzled" & was on his last leg! :? Seriously though, he was pulling 2-3 times what Vince Carter's were in comparison on some of thier best rc card's (I've been thinking how Vince has become somewhat "under-priced" as he still produce's at a star level). I fully 2nd the Alonzo Mourning mention, his stuff sells for ridiculous amounts! :shock:

Jerry Stackhouse in limited amounts.Every now and again I will see something of his go for way more than you would expect.I collected him right when he came out of UNC and was basically supposed to be the next Jordan.

Basketball to me is a very weird sport.You seem to hear about guys and they are the biggest thing for a few years and then their popularity fizzles out.Even if they do continue to perform on a regular basis.Its odd.

Back in the day Grant Hill was the biggest thing ever.Now...nada.
