Hey guys, I was just looking through some of my cards and was wondering what you all thought about some of the prospects that were featured in the 2008 Razor release, but probably won't have another auto until they reach the majors. I've got a handful of Jordan Lyles and some other players, and while I know the '08 Razors have really faded into the background, it seems possible that if one of these prospects has a hot start in the majors in the next year, prices could jump b/c there won't be any other auto cards for fans to buy.

If you had to choose, which do you think fans are more likely to do:

Pay big bucks for an '08 Razor auto

or

Wait for/buy 2011 (or later) Bowman auto?

If Lyles has a Bowman Chrome or Topps Chrome autograph, it will trump the 2008 Razor releases. Obviously, if there is no autograph, the Razor will perk up, but with the possibility of him breaking camp with the Astros at the age of 20, Topps will squeeze in an autograph totally dirt cheap.

* DISCLAIMER * I have a hoard of Lyles Razor singles as he was the key guy I went after when the product went live.

Trust me, Razor has hit rock bottom. There auto's are just like Just Minors and if your trying to invest, Bowman is the best thing to invest in.

Whoever was the 1 who voted for Razor, please post your name. Everyone would like to know who they can finally dump their razor autos on.

Heh, it's funny you should mention Just.2 plus years ago I stated on here that Razor junk was the equivalent of Just and got blasted with all the "just give them a chance" replies from people cracking the whip on that Razor bandwagon.LOL, now look at them.

I'd rather have a card produced 3 years earlier

I know there have been occasions when "cheap" minor league cards have gone for more than the major brand card. Isn't that the case for Cal Ripken Jr cards? If Pujols had a 1998 Just Minors auto card, wouldn't that draw significant interest? Those are obviously extreme cases, but worth considering.

If its a PC card, then I go with Razor as it is the first auto available. Value doesn't bother me.

Obviously, first Bowman Chrome autos are always going to trump Razor.

However, since Jordan Lyles is being discussed, it brings up an interesting opportunity. Lyles will not be in 2011 Bowman because his Razor exclusive contract isn't up until the summer or until he debuts with the Astros. So IF he breaks camp with the Astros or has an early summer debut, the Razor cards will be his only autograph until Topps can get some out (2011 Jordan Lyles Bowman Chrome auto Topps, please). In this case, I see the Razor cards selling pretty well for a while.

Are there other Razor exclusives who will make their debut this year (before the exclusive contract expires) that will have just the one auto?

Yonder Alonso could be one.

I'm not a prospector and I haven't followed prices but going on gut, I'd prefer '08 Razor Metal, then '11 Bowman, then '08 Razor Signature Series. I'm still a bit unhappy about the way metal was released after signature series while being essentially the same cards but more attractive.

I agree with you on the metal release. The gripes w/ the overall Razor release could fill up pages on this forum.

Another question: what if a player had an '08 USA auto along w/ their '08 Razor auto? I think there are a few players that have both. Which would most people prefer? In my mind the USA autos might be more appealing, but not by much.

Razor Signature is one thing, but the Razor Metal cards are seriously nice cards.

The distribution sucked, but the cards are nice.

It don't know if I would say it sailed already. He got 30 AB's in september and barely played off the bench. Yes, he made his debut, but its not like he was even given the chance to succeed. Now if he doesn't make the team or get traded out of ST, then his chrome auto that releases in May will put a huge dent in the remaining razor stuff. But if he does anything before then the razor stuff will be the stuff to get.

I think even if a guy now gets a chrome card, the razor card being made 3+ years prior will still hold some value, even if its not close to what it could have been

I thought it was established that year is meaningless if there is a Bowman Chrome autographed counterpart or even Elite autographed counterpart.

Of course they will always hold some value, but the dreams of the big payoff when the product initially hit is long gone...and it has nothing to do with the Metal release, etc.

I agree that the big payoff is long gone but I don't necessarily agree that year is completely meaningless once a chrome/elite auto comes out. Sure, it hurts dramatically, but there are still people who look for the first card produced

I voted 2011 Bowman based on what appears to be a market that has decided the 1st chrome auto is gold no matter the year. That said, I would love to see Aaron Hicks get off to strong start to see what his cards would do as he only has Razor, Pro Debut, and AFLACs.
