I think that Bonds' ball was a little more special. It was the only 765 ball. Jeter is the 28th player to get to 3000. The whole nation was folling Bonds' persuit of the record. Only baseball fans knew or cared that Jeter was getting his 3000th hit. It wasn't really national news... Bonds breaking Ruth's record was international news.

I certainly agree he should have slept on it. I think that's the key here people. If this ever happens to you, make sure you escape with the ball and go home and think about what you're going to do...

I dont know about that. Jeter is revered and Bonds was hated. Plus the supposition was that the Bonds ball was tainted and would ultimately be an ugly part of the history of baseball whereas Jeter has none of that controversy.

Well from what i read, giving that guy season tickets to the rest of the home games seems kinda shady from the organization.Epecially after giving the ball back to jeter. If it was me i would loan it out to the yankees.

From what I heard he was a diehard Yankees fan, so I think he did the right thing. The Yankees should pay his tax bill because that's just asnine that the government wants paid from this ordeal. I'm sure he's ecstatic about it all. I heard Jeter is getting home plate and has to sign a lot of things for Yankees/Steiner so they can sell and promote the milestone.

As for the poll, I think I would have given the ball back to Jeter after negotiating some sort of package. I know if I were in his (Jeter's) position I would want the ball back, so I would try to get it back to him. If I sold it, he might not ever get it.

Of course it's shady

Those tickets had a value of roughly $50,000. The ball was worth easily $250,000-$1,000,000. It may be one of the top 5 historic balls in New York history.

If this story involved cards, people here would have a bitchfit because of how bad this guy got ripped off. But because it's the Yankees, very few seem to care.

See, the guy tries to do a good deed and now owes $14,000+ dollars.

This is a pretty simple question.

Derek Jeter ball? I love Jeter as a player, but I'm not a Yankee fan or a huge Jeter fan. Catching the ball would have no emotional impact on me other than being there for history and being the lucky person who caught the ball. I'd sell it. If I am a millionaire and well off financially it would depend on the experiences that Jeter/Yankees offered. If it was something the average person would never get a chance to do, I'd give the ball back. Otherwise as a baseball fan I would keep it.

Now if Ben Zobrist was in the same situation, it would be a tougher decision. I would be so tempted to keep the ball, as it is a huge milestone for my favorite player, but I would probably end up giving the ball back to Zobrist.

I would have sold it to the highest bidder, paid whatever taxes are involved, then paid off all the debt I could with the money. I would then go to medical school.

That's because you are a smart individual and not a Yank's homer that feels Jeter is entitled to that ball

The IRS should make sure everyone working on Capitol Hill is up to ***** on their taxes before going after some guy who caught a baseball and got some stuff in return for it. Surely there is more money to be found there.

He received a benefit that had financial value. I had a buddy that won a car on Price is Right and he had to come up with 5 or 6 thousand to cover taxes, registration fees, etc. He also had to claim the car on his tax return.

I would put word out that I'd be open to selling it back to Jeter for whatever my top offer was elsewhere. I absolutely would give him first shot, but regardless of where it comes from, I gotta get paid.
