As much as im not a Mantle fan, it's really hard to say that he's not partially responsible for the cardboard addiction that we all have, in one way or another.

That got me to thinking about the '69 set, which featured his last card as a player (even though he didnt play in '69)

To me, the 1969 Topps set may be the last GREAT base set ever made, as it features most all of the greats that they started issuing cards for in the '52 set.

I also think the 1975 Set could have that title, since that set DOES include
that neat MVP supset, offering collectors all those great names of the past as well.

Without a doubt in my mind, the '75 is the last base set worth a damn as a whole that Topps released.

1980...last set I cared about collecting from Topps and what I feel is the transition set into the modern overproduced junk Topps puts out..

I'm partial to '56s, but I'm building the set right now...I know there is a lot of recycled photography, but the portraits on top of action shots make for a beautful design...plus the horizontal styling is pretty cool too.

That being said, I think there are a lot of great looking Topps sets...including in the last 20 years...I love '92, '03, and even '09 for example.

While the 1978 set is my alltime favorite set for sentimental/nostalgic reasons, I think the last great set of theirs was in 1983. Loved the dual picture design and the Boggs and Gwynn rookies were cool, too.

Allthough I like the options, and chose 1975, I think the '72 set has to be mentioned.

Rookie Cards of future Hall of Famers:
George Brett
Robin Yount
Gary Carter
Jim Rice

RCs of MVP winners Keith Hernandez and Fred Lynn.

Hank Aaron cards bookend the set. #1 is the highlight card where he sets the All Time HR mark. #660 is his base card.

Also has a great Nolan Ryan card that is almost impossible to find centered, let alone in Mint condition.
