Well, when the defender gets to break the rules and it's acceptable, which WAS the case here because Tejada didn't touch the base, then the base runner should be allowed to do the exact same thing. The defender doesn't have to play within the rules, so why should the base runner?

Why? Because one causes a broken leg and the other only makes an out. If the umpire can't see that his foot is off the bag, why is it the defenders fault.?

MLB should just go little league on this. Draw a white chalk line in the dirt ahead of 2nd base and make a rule that states if you don't start your slide before this line you're out.

There are 3 rules already on the books that Utley broke.

He and the hitter should have been called out under the CURRENT rules.

I agree - MLB has to enforce the rules as they are in their rule book. It's a crock that they don't. I think there will definitely be a change.

Yeah, something needs to be done. There was a slide at second base in one of the ALDS games that was pretty bad but luckily the fielder didn't get hurt. Glad the Dodgers won tonight so I can watch Game 5 Thursday night. It should be a great game. I can see Utley being a pinch-hitter in this game. Should be interesting.
