I'll go with Aaron, though that's only to answer the question. Otherwise, it's a tossup for me between him and Mays.

Mays, Aaron, and Bonds are the only position players who should be in the conversation. Griffey is close, but as someone pointed out, he was only an elite player for about 10 years. Plus, Mays was better than Griffey, so that eliminates Jr. I'd strike Bonds because he took PED's the last few years of his career, which skewed his numbers. He also had a weak-sauce arm and though his range was good, LF is less important defensively than CF. Between Mays and Aaron, you get to choose between a longer period of time where he was productive at the bat (Aaron) against a better prime and better defense at a more important defensive position. I'd choose Mays, but Aaron has a good argument too. If you don't mind PEDs, Bonds is a legit choice too.

Just as observation: Griffey wasn't really that great after 30. Had a couple really good seasons and some above-average seasons, but there weren't any HOF-type seasons.

Huh? Are you saying his entire carrer "above-average seasons, but there weren't any HOF-type seasons" ??? or just after 30?
Some of Griffey accomplishments:
1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 American League Gold Glove Award (thats right 10 years gold glove in a row!)
1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 Named to the All-Star Team 9thats right 11 years straight!)
1991 1993 1994 1996 1999 Earned Silver Slugger Award (thts right 5 silvers)
1992 Named All-Star Game MVP
1993 Became fifth player in history to hit 100 home runs before 24th birthday
1993 Set American League outfielder record for most consecutive chances (573) without an error
1993 Tied major league record for hitting homers in eight consecutive games
1993 Led league in total bases (359) and extra base hits (86)
1994 Led American League in home runs (40)
1996 3 homers in one game
1997 Set major league record for most home runs in April with 13
1997 Led American League in runs scored (125), home runs (56), and runs batted in (147); led entire major league in runs batted in (147)
1997 Named American League Most Valuable Player
1997 Named Sporting News Player of the Year
1998 Smacked 300th career home run
1998 Led American League in home runs (56)
1999 Led league in home runs (48)
2000 Became youngest player (30 years, 141 days) to hit 400 homers
2000 Became youngest player (31 years, 261 days) to hit 450th homer

I love how people seem to focus on how his carer eneded rather than see what he did in the prior years. Ken may only hve had 11 good years bot WOW what a good 11 years!

I think the title should be: 'Greatest living ballplayer according to folklore and what we assume them to be, not exactly the greatest according to the only thing that matters, which is the stats.'

Too easy to say Mays, Aaron, maybe Bonds - but those guys aren't fun - they are too surly, **********, too bording, didn't grab babies and take pictures, didn't sign autographs in the right spot, doesn't our ideals for whatever reason, et al.

other than Bonds... Were Mays and Aaron like that when they played?

LOL, I was very clear - Griff just wasn't a HOF-caliber player between 2001 and 2010. Doesn't mean we should disregard his previous stats.

Griffey still in my opinion had an amazing career and he just had a lot of bad luck after going to Cincy but he still had a lot of great seasons with them even if they weren't HOF caliber seasons. I think if he stayed in Seattle he still would have gotten injured. He played the game so hard and playing on astro-turf for as long as he did would take a toll on anyone's body. Also, just getting older like he did makes it harder to be as good as he was in his prime. Still had a lot of amazing things happen both in Seattle and Cincy and will always be my favorite! I was really happy that he was the comeback player of the year for 2007 which he had a great season! Should definitely still be a first ballot hall of famer and I think in the top ten greatest players of all-time!:p
