Ok, I'm convinced, I see how they are related...
1 - They will be overseen by the Federal Government.
2 - They are both located in the United States
3 - Both will probably utilize red, white & blue in their promotional materials

And, I'm amazed that they are related on so many levels so thanks for showing me the light.

The Post Office is only still in existence for one reason...it's required to be in existence.

I actually believe that the fact that the Post Office still delivers your mail is a actually proof that even the dumbest of bureaucracies can work. There is not a single entrepreneur or brainiac in this country who could turn the Post Office profitable based upon the requirements laid out in 1776.

This is absolutely 100% correct. The Post Office is not a business and doesn't raise the price of stamps/shipping to stay in the green. They do it to exist.

So since the government is requiring nationalized health care, and according to you, the "post office is only still in existence for one reason...it's required to be in existence"...Aren't the two even more related than you initially thought?

Did you know that one person can retire from the U.S. military and receive retirement money, AND that same person can then also retire from the U.S. postal service and receive retirement money as well, basically double dipping from the government? Was this laid out in 1776?

This is just another example of wasted government spending if you ask me. Don't get me wrong...I want people to receive what they deserve once they retire, but as far as I can tell, the USPS pays very, very well with extremely nice benefits. Is there much danger that employees of the USPS face? Is their job dirty? How about extremely difficult to do? Does it take people with high levels of intelligence? I ask all this to see if justification can be made as to why people are paid so well both during and after employment for the USPS. Or is it simply because it's a government ran organization that allows for wastefull spending?

I own a post office box, so these new rules barely affect me. Thank goodness.

Speaking from someone who delivered mail for two years, I can say that it isn't the most difficult job on this planet I'm sure Yet sorting/delivering mail for 550 houses every day in ANY weather that comes by (keep in mind your window is down the entire time) and keeping every household content and happy (wives/mothers get really pissed at you when their husbands/sons order Maxim and you deliver it for some reason)...is far from the easiest job as well.

Actually it sounds like a cakewalk. Lets just put it this way...there is a reason that there is practically a huge waiting line to even get a job there. Any job. And based on the job of sorting/delivering...well lets just say its nowhere near as hard as the pay seems to indicate. Usually you make good money for doing pretty skilled work. There is no reason my mail carrier should be making $20+ an hour. And depending on which one comes by...they may be making more.

How about the concept of "forever" stamps? LOL Aren't the government run post offices shooting themselves in the foot by selling forever stamps? Someone mentioned directv or cable in this thread as a comparison to raising rates. How cool would it be to pay your cable in advance in order to avoid rate increases?

I exclusively use the USPS for all mail unless I'm shipping large, heavy items to Canada. For that I use FedEx because it's a lot cheaper, faster, and less of a hassle.

I trust the USPS more than any other company. None of them are bad, but I think the USPS is the best for what I need to mail.

I do sincerely appreciate all the USPS workers. I have always been amazed how quickly I can send a letter across this country, and it has always cost me less than 50 cents. Wow!

I have been a Letter Carrier for the USPS for 13 years and take pride in the fact that I am honest and hard working. I do not believe you should comment on how hard the job is unless you have done it, in fact why dont you apply at the post office to be a temp, they are probably hiring. I am on my feet for 8 hours setting up the route for delivery and then on the street with a satchel full of mail for the rest of the day( I do not use a vehicle for delivery in the city), so yeah I consider it a skill. I believe I earn my salary whether you think I am overpaid or not. The days of the mailman hanging out at the local bar all day are long gone.

They should just increase postage to $2 for first class mail, and keep saturday delivery.

I mean, we totally take the mail system for granted.

How in the world are you going to send a letter from one end of the country to the other for two dollars?

This will cut down on all the mass junk mail, and the postal service will be in better financial health.

I've read somewhere that compared to a lot of other places in the world our mail service is actually quite low in terms of cost per item.

I'll live without mail on Saturdays.

I agree with brouthercard - it is time to jack up the rates for junk mail. I don't need 3-4 credit card applications a day in my mailbox.

I tried and they aren't hiring. AT ALL. There is a humongous waiting list. Its one of the first things that came to my mind in trying to find employment. I love being outdoors as its all I had ever done in my working life. Heat and cold do not bother me.

I do feel you should earn decent money but not more than a skilled tradesman or a nurse(which is what our local carrier makes). The only skill you really are using is the ability to sort things numerically and physical stamina. Ever try having to tell 5 other people what to do and make sure they do it right, watch a back hoe operator to make sure they don't bust a pipe you already buried, read a set of plans, call in materials, and get something laid out and run yourself all in 100 degree heat? In and out of a ditch with pipe all day long, dirty as hell, and your eyes having to watch everybody to make sure they don't mess up.

I think the job should pay based on what it demands. I don't feel there are certain jobs that do that. The post office is one of them. But its just my opinion.

It is your opinion, but you are misinformed. You probably think that your tax dollars pay my salary too.

I am fine with it AS LONG as they stop jacking up the price of mailing something.
They lose money every year...their prices should be a lot higher than they are currently.
USPS is like Amtrak Although USPS is not federally funded and Amtrak is federally sub-subsidized and they lose money every year too. Seems it is time for the USPS to figure out how to run and compete in this ever changing world or close up shop
all together.

I'd like to work an 8 hour shift. I'd like federal (well any) holidays off. I chose my occupation. I don't give a **** what anyone thinks about what I do or who I work for.

I just find it comical people try to compare certain jobs to others. Truth be told every job is hard at some point and probably a right royal pain in the ass. But there is a point where you have to kind of understand your job(not specifically you Justin) may not be as hard as the next guy's. Me...I'd hate to be an iron worker. To hell with that. I'd also hate to be a concrete pourer. Those jobs suck. Those guys work their ass off. So fast and so hard. I don't think I could handle it and I'll admit it. Apparently we have a few folks who wish to cast the P.O. as a hard working job. I'll just have to agree to disagree.
