Not saying I agree or disagree, but to those naysayers that say there isn't a premium for the first, last, or jersey number of players in a print run, pay attention!

This "books" for $20.
You can get another one right now for BIN $4.95.
This 1/5000 just sold for $37.37! :?

I agree that the 1st card of the print run will demand a higher premium.

Russ,

Reminds me of when I bought a 1998 Leaf Rookies & Stars Ripken insert at a pawn shop in Carson City, Nevada, for $2. I flip the card over, and there was the serial number in all of its glory #2131/5000! Later sold the card for $125.

I definitely DIDN'T plan on winning the Ripken #0001. I bid on a bunch of spnascar's auctions, mostly just his promos & samples, and a few of his McGwire's, but I only won the Ripken and 1 McGwire promo. I was mainly bidding b/c I had bid on quite a few of his other items and didn't really expect to win it. Probably too high, but I'll trade it 1 of these days for a Will Clark I need.

There's definitely a coolness factor in getting the first card from a very large print run, as opposed to the first from a run of 75 or so. With a card numbered to the latter number, too, the premium paid for 1/xx may be harder to see, for the scarcity of the card itself will demand a premium of its own; the added value may pale in comparison with the value of the card in and of itself, with bidders happy just to get the card, let alone the first one. Furthermore, most likely fewer people would bid on an expensive card that they already have just to get the first one, while more people would be willing to pay $20 or $30 above the normal value if the normal value is insignificant.

I paid a $10 premium or so for a Gomes card numbered 1/1999, and have no regrets.

1st, last and jersey # serial numbered cards have always gotten a premium. Anyone that argues this is either too young to know any better, new to collecting cards, in denial because they don't want to pay a premium or an idiot.

::facepalm:: Must be the new fad, bidding on cards you have no interest in winning. We used to call that bidding just to push the price up on other collectors that are seriously going after a card. It used to be considered a real ********* move. Not sure what happened but somewhere along the line the terminology for it changed and people started accepting this as common place. Well, in my book it's not. It's still a ********* move. You know there are collectors, some of whom you personally know on this forum, and you still deliberately bid on it with no intention of winning it? Real classy.

Now he's got a cool card though to flip for a Clark. ::facepalm::
After completed sales leave the viewing page of ebay, I'd imagine it would be hard to recoupe the $40 in trade on a $20 card though. I could be wrong. :ugeek:

Considering that the first card in a print run brings a premium, I should probably list my UD 20th Anniversary set card number 1. It has KGJ on the front so maybe that will help it along as well. Do you think these cards would be included in the first/last card in a series theory?

Yeah, I bid on cards a lot that I don't necessarily plan on winning. I bid on autographs, inserts, serially numbered cards, extra Clark cards I already have, out of print cds, vinyl record lots, lots of stuff. I bid early and don't worry about sniping b/c I feel that I will get outbid anyway. If being a ****** bag is bidding on auctions I am more than willing to pay for that I win, then that's what I am. Call it what you want. There would be no such thing as "flipping" if that wasn't the case. And just about everyone has done it, so I wouldn't try to call me out b/c I do it. Heck yeah, I admit it, I do it a lot, its called making money. But are you saying you've never bought a card then attempted to resell it for more?? Doubtful.

In this particular case, it may be hard to make a good return, I can definitely see that, but plenty of Ripken fans want it, so that's not the issue at all. So, if I can find a trade that's close, or even sell it, I will. It carries plenty of premium. But anyway, no big deal, you bid your way, I'll bid mine. But if everyone who has ever bought a card to trade/resell later is a *********, there is a lot of ********** in the hobby.
