Kickstarter is by far the best way to get financial support for any project. If you people haven't been to Kickstarter, it's a great site. Individuals/companies pitch ideas. They set a goal and open for donations. I've seen projects with goals under $100,000 hit 7 figures purely from donations for small perks.

If I had a quarter-million to spend wouldn't I just start my own case-cracking business? Even though he seems to have a functional business model, and a huge inventory, it just seems a little odd, not to mention overvalued unless there was something awesome that would be revealed in due diligence.

Nono. $250k for 5% ownership of the company. Basically, a quarter-mil for a portion so tiny that your opinion STILL wouldn't matter in the scheme of the business. The only benefit would be if the business somehow became worth WAY more than 5 millions and you earned dividends on your investment. Protip: That business won't exceed 5 million.
