Mac Williamson's Prospect Profile | Freedom Card Board.com

Third round pics like Mac Williamson don’t really get that much attention these days. Lots of people simply tune out of the MLB draft after the first round. Recently a lot of power bats have been coming later in the selection process. 2009 saw Paul Goldschmidt taken in the 8th round, largely due to a lack of exposure and upper level competition at Texas State. This year Mac Williamson of Wake Forest has the same sleeper level talent that Goldschmidt had then. Coming out of the ACC he’s seen more competition than anyone playing for Texas State and that results in the numbers not being as gaudy as Paul’s.

Mac's generated a lot of cautious excitement among Giants fans who pay attention to what's going on down on the farm. Of course, part of the excitement is due to the fact that the SF Giants are a team that's been weak on power for years (the last guy to hit more than 30 homers in a season was Barry Bonds back in 2004). Plus, we've had major outfield problems this year with LF being a strictly platoon spot for much of the season. Dysfunction at the major league level tends to magnify the attention that the corresponding talent gets in the Giants farm system, no matter how far down the road it is.

It's anyone's guess what the OF situation will be in SF by the time Williamson gets in position to get the call.

He was also in 2012 Elite as an on-card auto, but at a much lower price. This #/25 auto card cost less than a #/500 BC auto refractor is going for right now.

There have been a number of Giants minor league righty outfielders who have put up impressive numbers. However, none of them have translated their low-minors power to the majors.

The last slugging outfielder Giants farm system has produced was Chili Davis (switch hitter) back in the 80s.
