So Far:
Early January - discussions between Pujols and the Cardinals begin.
Mid January - the Cardinals are "hopeful" to get a deal done.
January 16th - Pujols' agent tells the Cardinals that the deadline is the first day of Spring Training.

I hate not knowing more details, I hate the wait, and I hate the gut feeling I have about this.

Buster Olney has a lot to say about this.

I heard rumors of mega-trades involving the Rangers (Hamilton/Feliz/Prospects) and Dodgers (Kershaw/Kemp/Prospects) on MLB XM, but my guess would be the always favorite "purely speculation."

If we can't sign him before the deadline then I hope we trade him this season. I think he wants the largest all-time contract and the Cardinals will not do it.

The cardinals must be stupid hese going to be one of if not the best players to ever play the game give him the cash if they don't I know the Yankees will. I could see the Yankees trading montero,Sanchez,Tex or berkman for him that'd be a good trade

Berkman is a Cardinal.

A Yankees/Cardinsls trade would be tough because the Cardinals wouldn't want Texeira's contract if they can't sign Albert. It would have to involve Montero and Chamberlain just to start off talks.

Any way pujols goes to the yanks?

I really don't see how he could end up in Boston or NY. Both teams have long term guys at 1st, and with the Yankees, they have multiple guys who will need to DH on the back end of their deals. Between Teixeira and A-rod, 1st and DH appear to be locked up for the near future. Between Gonzalez and Youkilis, same thing for the Sox.

This would be my initial offer to Pujols:

Years 1-5: $30 mil per ($150 Million)
Year 6: $25 mil with incentives possibly worth $5 mil
Year 7: $20 mil with incentives possibly worth $10 mil
Year 8: $15 mil with incentives possibly worth $15 mil
$210 Million guaranteed (possibly worth $240 million)

Tons of cash for Albert and structured in a way that would keep the Cardinals competitive.

--1B Albert Pujols' future contract extension occupies the thoughts of many Cardinals fans, and though nobody was commenting publicly about the matter, there were reports that progress was being made. Pujols has said he does not want to negotiate a future contract during spring training.

It doesn't matter where A-rod is in his career. He's locked up for $25M a year on average through 2017, Teixeira through 2016. The yankees literally have nowhere to put Pujols unless they trade Arod or Tex, neither of whom are going anywhere given their massive contracts. Sox will have Gonzalez locked up through 2017, and likely sign Youkilis to a contract extension in 2013. A-rod won't be able to play 3rd by the end of the contract so he'll go to DH, Youkilis certainly won't be able to play 3rd after 2013 so he'll become the DH. Pujols can't fit on the Sox or Yanks unless there is a trade which won't happen.

I can't think of another player off the top of my head that has his contract so front loaded. Why would Albert be the first? I agree that eight years is the starting number. If I'm DeWitt I offer 250 MM/8 with at least one more year of a club/mutual at a more favorable cost to the team.

I felt that all of the suspense was taken out of the Pujols extension issue when the cards signed Matt holliday. Signing Holliday to that contract and not keeping pujols would mean the entire front office should and would lose their jobs. Pujols will be signed before the season starts. See: Joe Mauer. Twins fans were all nervous about him leaving- he signed his extension on March 22nd 2010. Pujols' agent has to drag things out because that is his only leverage in the negotiations if Pujols has told him he wants to stay.

And as far as the Yankees and Rdd SOx or any other team "not needing Pujols" because they have big contracts at 1B? Puh-lease. That is the most narrow minded thing I've ever heard. Tex, take your multi million dollar contract and move over to DH as you are nto one of the top 10 batters in teh history of the game. I woudl like to think that the Red SOx front office would do the same with Adrian Gonzalez in less than the blink of an eye. But they'll never have the chance.

Honestly, I'd rather sign him for $175 million over 5 years($35 mil per is insane BTW) than $30 million per over 8 years.

If Albert demands a record yearly amount AND a long (8 years) term at the same time, then he was not being honest when saying winning is the most important thing.

Who said any team didn't need Pujols? So if the Yanks move Tex to DH what do they do with A-rod in 2/3 years?

After living St. Louis for three years, I can say that I cannot imagine the Cardinals not giving Pujols whatever money he wanted. If they let him go, those people down there will go completely sideways. Riots will ensue and Busch Stadium will be a ghost town come opening day, just like the brewery since InBev took over.
