does anyone know if this set was ever issued as a reprint set?

Yes it was, as I have seen a couple over the years pop up on ebay,

thanks for the info.. is there any way to tell the reprints form the originals?

I don't know for sure but I would def check the edges and corners as the corners on just about every one I have seen has been rounded and "reprint" should be somewhere stated on the back,
