The Yolk! That's the other place I really liked but couldn't remember the name. A great breakfast at a great price.

I go to 25 or so cubs games a year and lived 3 blocks away for a couple of years recently. If you need other ideas, or want some confirmation, shoot me a pm.

Considering I know the guy that owns that place, I'll have to endorse it as well.

This is why I love this board so much, thanks for the advice from everyone. Has anyone here eaten at any of the Rick Bayless resturants? My wife and I are fans of his cookbooks and I was wondering how good the resturants are?

Any ideas on White Sox tickets, I'm trying to decide if we get to Chicago early in the week if I want to take in a White Sox game.

Probably going to come off like a HUGE dick here, but having been born in and grown up in Chicago, I do not
understand the deep dish pizza obsession. It's an undercooked, doughy, overcheesed, oversauced mess.

Chicago has better thin-crust pizza than most other places in the country, and tons of incredible family owned restaurants.
Yet people always talk about Gino's and Giordano's and Due and Uno. Sorry, but you couldn't pay me to eat that tourist crap.

If you like pizza, and food in general, try to find some good local restaurants. Ask at your hotel,
and tell them that you don't want the typical tourist trap BS.

If you want really good thin-crust pizza, try O'Fame on Western Ave.
If you like Spanish Tapas - Cafe Ba-ba-ree-ba on Halsted is unbelievable
If you really like steak and want to spend a lot of $$$ - try Morton's or Gene & Georgetti's

As far as the Cubs, weekday games will be easier, otherwise stubhub is your best bet.
For the Sox - if it's a weekday game, someone might be giving tickets away.

I went to Chicago for 2 days for business about 12 years ago, still one of my favorite trips. I think it was only November but there was a cold winter wind already blowing hard. Our hotel was on Michigan Ave, and we waited for an hour outside Gino's East for a table, so maybe tourist trap is the right word, but it was really, really good. The next night I found my way to the hockey rink and watched the Blackhawks lose, I think to the Canucks. Too bad it wasn't a Bulls game, I still regret never seeing Jordan in person. Probably couldn't have afforded those tickets, though. All in all, it felt like a very exciting city out there between prairie and lake.

As long as you're there, you might see if the Sox are in town, too. Could make a perfect double-header.

If its a game during the week, you should be able to at least be able to walk up the day of and buy upper deck seats. If it's weekday, day game, you could probably buy field box seats the day of.

If it's on the weekend and you don't want to pay absurd scalper prices, ask the the guys running the parking lots within a few blocks or the randoms walking the streets that have tickets for sale right before the game starts. Trust me, it works.

THIS. Walk around Waveland Avenue behind the outfield bleachers before the game and you'll be able to find season ticket holders trying to get rid of their seats, usually for face value. Avoid the scalpers who hang around the Red Line.

Giordanos for pizza. Shedd Aquarium. Skip the Field Museum and Navy Pier unless you have kids with you. Hit up the Signature Room bar on top of the Hancock Bldg. Skip the Sears Tower. A pain in the ass to get to, it costs $, and it isn't worth it. Do a river architecture tour if it is nice and you have the time. Also lots of good steak places. Can't go wrong with the Chicago Chop House or Gibson's, but there are many more. The Art Institute is a must see.

We tried to get reservations at Topolobampo (sp?) but were shut out. Great reviews, though. Still managed to have some excellent meals. They number of quality restaurants in that city in the $150-$250 range is endless, it seems.

Here is a tip, if you dont want to pay for the observation deck in the hancock tower there is a bar like 2 floors below it with the same view. Granted you will need to buy a drink or 2 but its great.

But I suggest doing both and make sure if you are close get the Day night pass. You can come back in I think either 24 or 48 hours and see it at both night and day. Also Grab the headsets when you get to the observation deck, while David Schwimers voice is annoying it rocks being able to hear and then look down at a screen and get a Chicago history lesson along with photos.

Looked at the Sox schedule and they are in town for Sunday June 25th day game and that Friday at Wrigley against the Cubs. Sunday's game will be very easy to grab and tix will go for less than face value and sit close to the field. I would recommend hitting up that park since it is one of the newer parks. But there is no need to get there early. Once you get off the "L", walk directly to the stadium. It's not in the best part of town. Now if you are able to swing the Sox/Cubs game that Friday, that is the game to go to.

My favorite restaurant hands down is Tango Sur. It is on Southport, between Addison and Waveland.

TRUST ME on this one. I have been there 20 and have never had a bad meal. I have 100's of friends who live downtown and more than half of them state this place as their favorite restaurant.

The Details -

BYOB - Grab a bottle or two wine at CVS or Jewel right down the street
Argentinian steakhouse
Have to get their early, if you go after 6:00, you might wait an hour or more
They take your cell number if there are busy and call you when it is ready, so you can go to a bar next door and grab a drink.
Extremely affordable - $20 gets your TWO filets, mashed potatoes, salad, and bread.
The food is incredible and the atmosphere is very cool.

To me, this place is HANDS DOWN the best bang for your buck in the entire city.

ENJOY!

Thanks once again to all of you who have offered advice. Looks like my wife and I need to start planning out our trip so we can make sure to take it all in.

Picked up a couple of tickets to the day game Cubs vs Giants, in the Terrace Box Infield section 223-1 row 2. Looks like they're behind the plate, hope it's a great game.

AWESOME thread for me too, because we are taking the three kids (age 10, 5, and 3) to a Phillies-Cubs game on July 20th at Wrigley and have had many of these same questions in our head. Bought the tix yesterday online and are now going to be looking in hotels on the redline so we can get to Wrigley w/out driving or getting into a taxi.

Now we just have to fill Tuesday the 19th!
