I have a 1978 Bump Wills (not 1979) black circle error/variation card that Im pondering if it should be graded.

Its a legit variation card (Ill leave out the details) but my question is if I should get it graded?

Im asking because the card probably would grade a 6 BUT it is mega rare as Ive only seen less than 5 of them over the last 20 plus years.

Would getting it graded, even in a 6 shape, do anything for value? Im sure it would help the authenticity of it but wondering if its just a waste of money. Also, it would be in a BGS holder.

I don't think a 6 grade will do anything substantial for it. I'll also add that the 6 or 7 raw copies that I have owned over the years were all pretty much a 6 or 7 in grade, an 8 or higher would be very impressive. Unfortunately, so many have popped up since 2005 that they hardly sell for much more than $20 raw. They'd likely see a short spike in demand if they were properly cataloged in the guides.

For me, I think the question is whether or not a printing process error (black mark) is considered a "variation." Personally, I consider it a defect more than anything else. That said, it hasn't stopped me from going after 2010 Topps with printing flaws on the backs.

If BGS will notate this as a variation (which I doubt they will), then slabbing it is a no brainer, regardless of condition.

It's definitely a variation. A black circle was drawn (presumably with a sharpie) on the negative. This was fixed, creating a variation.

I've only seen a terribly small scan of one and never two "variations" side by side to compare so I obviously don't know. Do you have a decent scan of one or two of them to compare?

I think the first 4 or 5 that I saw/sold, went for over $100 - back in 2005ish, by 2008, they were getting $20-25, only a couple have been listed since then and either went for the starting bid or sold really low, I'm not 100% certain on it.

I don't have a scan handy, but I'll post when I can dig one provided someone else doesn't beat me to it.

It literally looks like someone drew a black circle over the trophy/grass area, which probably led to many of them getting trashed by people.
