Player Collectors, do you have a game plan when fighting the A&G Set Builders for cards?

Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and just pay through the nose for the stuff you want man. A&G is a heavily collected set, so best of luck. People would laugh when I'd say I paid $75 per for Markakis A&G plates, or $350 for a wood 1/1, but the set collectors are hard core. Good luck man.

EDIT: Did you win the A&G plate that ended for $42?

Yes, I just spend more than them until I'm done. :D

+1

Wait out cards that have decent quantities, go hard after those that don't. Deal with it if I'm missing some when all is said and done.

I won't laugh at you. I just paid 300 for the Ethier wood 1/1 so I'm in the same boat.

The 1/1s is really just a slugging match between wallets. With the others (/50, /25, even /10), however, I usually let a few go by before buying mine, as by then the most serious set collectors have already purchased their copies and the prices tend to be slightly lower.

Edited to ad: When 2007 A&G came out, someone bought a 2007 Gomes plate at a 25 BIN before I saw it. I asked him if he would like to sell it, and he said that he had again put it with a BIN ($50, this time). Turned out someone had seen it before me (again!), and it's now locked up in a collection. Ugh! Really, really wish that the original purchaser had had the decency to have just done the deal via email.

For the cards /50 or /25, I will wait a while to buy them until the prices are a little lower. For 1/1s especially sketches and woods, I will pretty much bid whatever it takes to win them. If they are up with a BIN/BO, I will put in an offer that is pretty much the most that I want to pay. This way, they will realize that I am very serious about buying the card, and even if someone has a higher offer, the seller will at least send me a counteroffer. With A&G, trying to haggle with the seller really doesn't work. If you don't buy it, someone else will.

As a player collector first, and a crazy A&G collector second. I can say I haven't gotten most of the hard to find cards of my guy yet. No woods to my name anyway.

This is the first year Frank isn't in the set though.

I'll chime in as a the crazy team collector. This will mark the fourth year of trying to obtain a Dodger 'rainbow' (excluding /1 woods and /10 silks). Challenging, but not too hard. I'm down to just six cards from '06 and seven from '08. '07's all done.

There are always bigger fish...that's just how it goes. The only thing you can do is buy and collect within your means.Bagwell is not in those sets but if he was I would honestly go about collecting his cards the same way I do with any other sets he is in.Get what I could when I could and if I was able to get them at good prices then that would be great.Sadly though his stuff always seems to go a little higher than even I would normally expect so these days I take nothing for granted and just assume everything will cost a fortune. That way I am pleasantly surprised.

Great input from everyone.

Certain sets are different "animals" then most issues. A&G is one of them, Heritage is another.

i dont mind playing the "waiting game", but sometimes (especially with the less "popular" releases)
they never come around again.
