I think Jim Brown wanted to be an actor when he quit football, remember Andy Katzenmoyer (Ohio State then Patriot LB) I think he quit out of nowhere.

Could Michael Jordan be thought of as a quitter??

The definition of the word quitter that everyone is using in this forum is someone who gives up because it was too tuff. I don't think basketball was "too tuff" for Michael Jordan.

Keeping himself from gambling sure was.

How is this thread 3 pages long and I have seen no mention of the greatest quitter ever. I got two words for you.

This is from wiki and sums up Operation Shutdown

Pittsburgh: Competing for a job and "Operation Shutdown"

In spring training 2002, while with the Pirates, Bell, who had hit .173 the previous season, did not feel that he needed to prove he was worthy of a starting job.

On March 18, Bell told reporters:

"Nobody told me I was in competition. If there is competition, somebody better let me know. If there is competition, they better eliminate me out of the race and go ahead and do what they're going to do with me. I ain't never hit in spring training and I never will. If it ain't settled with me out there, then they can trade me. I ain't going out there to hurt myself in spring training battling for a job. If it is [a competition], then I'm going into 'Operation Shutdown.' Tell them exactly what I said. I haven't competed for a job since 1991."

Bell jumped the team on March 29, was released on March 31, and never played in the majors again. The Pirates ended up paying him $4.5 million not to play for them.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette sports columnist Mark Madden summarized the incident with "Derek Bell becomes the ultimate Pirate: Lives on a boat and steals money."

The whole Barry Sanders deal started with the Lions firing Wayne Fonts. That was the real issue. And in the end Barry was pretty much correct. The Lions are pathetic, and at least look like they don't try to win.

Barry Sanders is definitely a quitter. He didn't retire "on top". He retired because the Lions franchise wasn't doing enough to win. He retired because he didn't like the direction the Lions were heading, which means he quit on his team instead of trying his best to get them to that next level. That said, he is my favorite RB of all time and the best pure runner to ever play the game.

Sanders and Barber both left their professions. They were not laid off or fired; they quit. Why the confusion?

Michael Jordan, Cal Ripken, Jr., Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Sandy Koufax... quitters all too?
