I think that it is the fact that it takes many of back to when the hobby was fun and the inserts were neat. very few GU and the diecut inserts and the nicely designed cards were most popular.

Then you have player collectors that may have just started collecting players that had some nice inserts in the 90s that have to go back to pick those up (thenumberonemetfan collecting Travis Lee, etc).

Just my thought.
Thanks for your post! I guess I can see how they are popular. But, I still don't understand how they have become so popular seemingly overnight. I don't think they were popular a year ago, were they?
Also, can you tell me if this card is worth anything? It's sort of like a diecut, but then again, it isn't. I'll try and find a scan on ebay, or scan tomorrow.
1998 Topps Lords of the Diamond A-Rod

Honestly they still aren't as popular as they once were. There were a few of us who collected them anyways but now its starting to catch on here. But for most of the card shows and shops a lot of these cards can still be found in the 25 cent bins. They still are not that big of a deal to most of the hobby. Its why I say beckett is the real influencer of the market because none of these cards are featured in their mag and none of them are on the hot list or even considered great cards to own. They are considered dinosaurs of a lost era a lot of people do not care about.A lot of collectors just can't see reverting back to the things that used to be popular. Now since GU and autos mean everything.

Had this until last week. Not sure if someone here snagged it.

They do sure look much better than most cards produced today. I think it'd be cool to have 90s insert buybacks. Like a Griffey Jr. Crusades buy back.

Yeah, kinda happy with some of the scans this thing puts out. Not too bad for a $150 all-in-one from Wally World.

Screw a buyback, I just want them to do one more Crusade set that closely mimics the 1998 release, not the crappy releases that appeared this decade.

If a card company did another crusade set it wouldn't fair as well IMO. I think what drove the crusades in the beginning was the scarcity and lack of ebay and later on was being able to obtain one of your 'dream cards' that you couldn't afford 5 or 10 years ago. If someone were to release this set again it would bomb as it would just be another low-numbered insert set; nothing special in today's terms.

True.

Though, I have to say that it depends on your location as to how the 1998 set was perceived. I know in my hometown growing up, the cards weren't sought after as much. I remember one guy pulling a David Justice (green) in the shop and he basically shrugged it off and put it back in the pack. Not sure whatever happened to it though.

Good grief - that would be insane. By that I mean: The crush to get a Buy Back Crusade would be, IMO, beyond description.

Presuming they (Panini Donruss) could even manage to repurchase the entire Crusade run, with all those scarce Reds. Can you imagine?

Yikes.

Let's say Panini Donruss were able to get say... 10 Greens, 5 Purples, and 1 Red from the entire Crusade line of every major player. Having a special stamp/re-number...

Man, that would genuinely be insane.

+1

The context of when and how the Crusades were released can't be emphasized enough. Lot of history that is unlikely to be repeated. S'why film sequels rarely live up to the hype generated by the original.

There are of course exceptions to every rule - i.e. The Godfather Part II and Aliens, but for a good 99% of films, their sequels never recapture the magic of the first movie.

A new Crusade line would undoubtedly be fun to chase, but the aura - no.

I also agree, but I don't think it would be shrugged off entirely if they did them right and made them super tough pulls in a fairly cheap product. I believe they would hold a little value and not tossed into a commons box like the vast majority of the newer inserts of today are.

I can see that. <nodding>

And as I give it more thought - guys like Pujols and Braun, who came up after '98, would likely generate a ton of interest.

Good point.

EDITED: You also make another good point. When I was first starting out and didn't know any better (not realizing how lucky I truly was) one of the most impressive moments I can recall was when I was busting packs (couldn't afford boxes) of '93 Donruss and pulling a 1-in-gajillion Elite. That shiny bugger really popped out from the regular cards.

If they were to do Crusades again - it would be best if it were inserted into a 'plain' issue. No UV coating, no other inserts. Sort of a Willy Wonka type deal. You'd know you hit the jackpot when that shiny edge poked through the cardboard. <g>

Although they were not exactly hard to pull they kinda brought the old Gallery of Heros set back in the form of 2008 stadium club beam team. That's the entire reason I am going after the set.
