I put rare in quotes, because the inserts aren't exactly considered rare by todays standards of /25, /10, /5, and 1/1. Some of the best inserts were made in the 90s. Crusades, 93 Refractors and so on. What are some of the other hard to find, significant, or just eye appealing 90s inserts that are out there? I picked up a 1998 Select 5 Star Bonus last night. I think they are sharp looking cards. The Donruss Elite Series, 1996 Select Certified, and the 1997 Pinnacle Certified. What are some of your favorites or what else should make the list?

You're right, but they get listed both ways on eBay.

Strange.

I thought they were 97, because I have seen them listed that way...funny, I have been looking for a 1997 crusade ordonez, and now i don't want it if it's 1998 (thanks for the heads up). Are there any good rookies in the crusades then? If not, that's a bummer.

Well, since they are technically 1998, then the Ordonez is a rookie.

Besides that, I don't think there were any other notable rookie names.

I recently picked up a Derek Jeter 1999 Gallery Gallery of Heroes card out of a quarter box at a local show. It looks like a stained glass window. I was going to flip it on the bay, but decided to keep it since it looks so nice (particularly when held up to the light).

**edit** added a scan.

I think my favorite inserts from the '90s were the 1996 Leaf Total Bases (the card felt like a canvas base) and Hats Off (that felt like a hat). I never figured out how Donruss, one of the most innovative card comapnies ever, was beaten to the punch by UD in launching actual Game Used cards when they had "fake" ones several years earlier.

And there goes magicpapa, making every man on the board feel that much more insecure about himself and his collection ;)

Speaking of which, magicpapa, do you happen to know anyone with a 1997 Elite Insert of Derek Jeter?

/on topic

I also liked 1998 Leaf and the Fractal Matrix inserts....confusing as hell but some were really nice.

Funny you should mention the fractal matrix cards. I was thinking of them also when I read this post.
