I am curious to see what type of card shops people go to. What would you give it outa 10?

Mine personally, well kinda sucks.
I go* (1-2 times a month) to Westlake Cards Comics & Coins in Roselle IL
It seems like the store is 75% comics and coins, but there are some sports cards. All 4 major sports, couple hobby boxes, some cards in a case. He's got around 3-4 open hobby boxes of stuff to buy, also has 5-8 sealed boxes. Everything is pretty much a tad bit over priced. Like a pack 2008 Bowman baseball is 4.99. He seems to have firm prices and I thought maybe if I bought a couple of stuff, he would reduce the price a bit.
Everytime I go there I mainly go for supplies. I honestly don't feel like spending 40$ for a Rich Hill Triple Threads Autograph. I feel as if I am rushed there. Like the guy watches me like a hawk, follows me as I go up and down the card cases. He doesn't say anything except what the total cost is. He seems kinda pissed that I come. It's kinda close to where I live so that is a plus, but the store kinda sucks.

I would give it a 3.5/10.

It would go up if the guy was friendly and if he realized that I was perhaps the only person under the age of 30 to come into his store.

How's you card shop?

P.S anyone know about any card shops close to the Roselle, Addison, Bloomingdale region?

P.S

I have two.

Both are a strong 7-8/10 with good owners, nice people, good wax prices always. Only category they lack in is singles, one significantly worse than the other.

Id give mine a 2/10. One point since they have cards and the other cause the guy is nice. Though as far as im concerend its nonexistant. Then there is a flea market that Id give about an 8/10. This one I like alot, Im really friendly with most of the guys and great prices on wax. The second flea market is really bad though that is where I pulled the Buchholz super out of 2 loose packs so go figure.

The shop i go to is excellent, imo. The shop is totally devoted to just cards (some Mcfarlanes and autoed memorabilia) with all the sports for sale in there. He has a number of showcases with at least one showcase all full of singles from each of the four main sports. Large supply of wax of all sports (he gets pretty much every product in from every sport), with his range of years not only going back a number of years, but also wax from the 80's and 70's. All the supply's you need, all the different Hobby publications. Great store. Id give him a 8.5/10

rarely frequent my shops any longer, but i don't rate them very highly.

shop #1- GREAT guy- very nice, very accomodating, decent prices, but not many singles i like + rarely any toploaders (card saver Is for BGS subs) i need. unfortunately, he RARELY has products i like + when new stuff comes in, he only gets maybe 2-5 boxes- which is totally not enough to satisfy my chrome addiction. weird magic/pokemon/whatever the teens play nowaday kids hog the shop. they're ok, but the shop lacks in card talk.

shop #2- guy who works there= fantastic personality. owner= spazztic/kind of nervous/not overly friendly. prices are ridonkulicious- $100+/box of chrome? LULZ meet the land of reality dude. i go here only when i'm totally desperate/NEED supplies NOW.

shop #3- guy who works there= fantastic personality. owner= used to have a fantastic personality until he tried to pressure me into buying a case of fb that was WAY overpriced even though i had ONLY said 'i may possibly be interested in 2+ wks- if someone comes in and wants the case/boxes, obviously sell to THEM.' he no longer gets any of my business, not even if i'm despearate for supplies.

shop #4- used to be a good shop + even had good singles/ok prices. closed about a yr or so ago. they searched cases/sold on ebay so i rarely got good pulls out of bsk/nfl cases (harder to search bc/bcdp baseball). kind of miss the shop.

shop #5- a little further drive, but nice guy/good prices. just not enough boxes in stock + not enough singles.

shop #6- like shop #5. just not so compelling for me to drive to.

bottom line- shops around here SERIOUSLY lack in meeting my chrome/ee/sterling/wax needs + don't even register a blip on meeting my singles (prospects, decent vintage, gu that is remotely fairly priced, etc.) prices.

long live ebay. sad that ebay's putting shops out of business, but seriously, @ $100/box of chrome, i CAN'T afford to 'support local businesses' on any kind of regular basis.

One's in Flushing - I think it's now called Duel Zone Collectibles - it's a small store that does yugioh, MTG, and sports. They have good prices on wax and some nice high end singles for pretty much market value.
The other is in queens near 35 Ave (near me and dave, but real close to dave). This one has horribly overpriced singles, but wax is also essentially market value, and the couple who owns it is real nice. Called Who's On First.
I like em both

Would you be willing to go to Naperville??

Galaxy stores has a really good selection. That is really the only thing they have that stands out. I have been going there forever and can never get a price cut despite spending 10's of thousands there over the last 10 years. They aren't overpriced, right on par I would say as to what you would expect. BUT, they ALWAYS have all the wax you could want, and have chrome from all years etc...

Spokane WA-

New shop, 2 weeks old right by my house. Owned by really awesome lady (who also works at farmers insurance) and her husband(lawyer), run by her high school kids in the afternoons and weekends. Good stock of supplies and about Six 5-row boxes full of singles including lots of Chrome Singles form 2000-2009. Going to go through all 6 boxes this weekend. They only have 3 Valuable Singles that are over $100, 1 more that is over $30, the rest are crappy Just/Tristar/Press Pass/Sage jerseys and autos and some lower end Topps and Upper Deck jersey and autos. Wax is bad too, though they do have Bowman Chrome boxes form 2001-2008 and chrome draft from 2005-2008. 4/10

Downtown- like the new one but some crazy ass singles and a better wax collection. Great Guy, gives breaks and even trades boxes for your singles. 8/10

Out in the Valley- like the second one but has over 200 different open and sealed hobbyu boxes.,....prices are way too high though. 6/10

The ONLY shop here is downright horrible. It's more of a comic & coin shop as well but he has a good bit of cards, mostly older stuff. His prices are extremely overpriced, cards and supplies. Not to mention that one of the job requirements there is that you must smoke 2 packs a day.

He does however, have a few cards I'd like to buy though, but I don't think he's willing to come down on the prices.

1.5/10

My shop is great. We have frequent events such as pack wars, and signings 2-3 times/year or so. Prices are great for a card shop, and singles of home-team players are plentiful. They even re-stock on some wax (past the initial 1-3 cases that is), the only downfall for me is that those products are usually football, high end, or non-prospect products.

A 9/10.

Not sure which shops your talking about danx but when I lived on Long Island I always liked the shop in Attias Flea Market. Monster Comics across the street though was always a rip off with overpriced stuff.

If you live on Long Island the best place to go is the Tri-County Fair, on the Mezzanine level. Go see Izzy, and tell him Howard sent Ya. Great prices on Wax and if he doesnt have it, he can get it for you. He is truly a first class guy. Plus there is also a bunch of other guys their with a huge assortment of singles at fairly good prices.

the really bad place is on main st in patchouge. Monster was bad but is not in the sunvet mall anymore i have no clue what happened there. Attias I dont particulary care for, the guys are nice but way overpriced and hardly a selection.
