No so good with the embedding and linking and stuff, but this is a horrendous call on the final strike of the game. Just awful, like the ump was determined to ring up Zobrist no matter where the pitch was.

Joe Nathan looks sheepish as his catcher comes to congratulate him on save number 300.

 And again A.J. is on the receiving end of that Controversy. You have to love A.J he is the master of this.

Oh and it is not where it ends up at, but it is where the ball crosses the plate. And Marty Foster thought it cross over the plate sometime in that path. But clearly it does not even come close. It would appear that it confused him on the movement of that ball.

It's not where the ball ends, but where the ball crosses the plate..

The angle of the camera makes it look bad as well..

I see it as a strike.. moving away as it crosses the plate..

Ouch. That was pretty bad. No way you can argue that for a strike. Even the side view shows that thing was so low...clearly under the knees and I feel it was outside the entire time.

The ump admitted he blew the call after the game. That leaves you as the only person who still sees that as a strike.

Why isn't anyone complaining about called strike 1?

Here is the pitchFX chart...

numlocation.php-pitchSel=150274&game=gid_2013_04_08_tbamlb_texmlb_1&batterX=73&innings=yyyyyyyyy&sp_type=1&s_type=3.gif

That pitch was less than an inch and a half further off the plate than the first called strike was.

Looking at this chart, Hellickson had a called strike that was further off the plate than the pitch to Zobrist was...

Everyone seems to be forgetting that fact that this one at bat didn't lose TB the game. They were already losing, and would have had to score just to tie the game (forget about actually winning). Getting robbed would be a play that actually changed the outcome of the game; in this case I think it was far more likely that Nathan would have gotten another batter out than TB scoring twice to win the game (or even just tying it up).

The problem with this argument is that while its true, it misses the point. Probabilities don't mean squat when a blown call happens in that situation.

So yes, they got robbed. The hitter got robbed by being called out. The team got robbed of another at bat and a chance to make a come back. That is a fact.

Did the call alter the outcome of the game? We'll never know. But the call ended the game too soon and so yes, the Rays got robbed.
