"The Rockies have acquired Marco Scutaro from the Red Sox in exchange for Clayton Mortensen, reports ESPN's Jim Bowden (on Twitter). Troy Renck of The Denver Post first reported that the two sides were finishing up the trade. Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe says (on Twitter) that the Red Sox will platoon Mike Aviles and Nick Punto at shortstop."

I thought Mortonsen was a football reporter but apparently the Sox want him to help them internally. They must have needed a new voice on their staff.

Anyways, Welcome to Boston, Roy Oswalt......or Gavin Floyd

UPDATE:
With the Marco Scutaro trade providing $6MM of salary relief, the Red Sox have now intensified their pursuit of Roy Oswalt according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (all Twitter links). They are not the only team in on the right-hander, though the Tigers are only on the fringe of the sweepstakes. Morosi calls the situation "fluid."
Oswalt, 34, is reportedly looking for a one-year deal worth $8MM. Earlier this week we heard that Boston would have to move some money to be able to afford him, which is exactly what the Scutaro trade did. Oswalt pitched to a 3.69 ERA with 6.0 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9 in 139 IP for the Phillies last season, missing time with back problems. Prior to that, the long-time Astro made at least 30 starts and threw at least 180 IP in seven straight seasons.

Odd to see the Sox simply dumping salary. Obviously means a pitching acquisition is coming but weird offseason for Boston.

So who plays SS? Punto, Aviles, and Iglesias all suck.

.....who's Clayton Mortensen???? (I did look him up ::facepalm:: )

Scutaro was one of few who manned up last Sept......

I was pretty sure he was the ESPN football reporter but apparently not?

Clayton Mortensen was the second-tier piece in the Matt Holliday trade. 1st Rounder in 2007, had a BCDP auto. I had a ton of them too.

Aviles/Punto won't be that bad. Can't expect Scoot to put up another .781 OPS anyways.

Oswalt/Floyd with the freed up $?

I was just messing around with the Mortensen name as far as thinking it was the ESPN guy but I did have to look to see who Clayton Mortensen was lol. Looks like Oswalt is the next move for the Sox as updated above.

Good trade as far giving Clayton; didn't show much when he was here, and didn't expect much.
I have no problem giving up Mortensen, but why are we the dumping ground for Scutaro's salary? We can back up Tulo for a lot cheaper, though I'm sure Marco can play 2nd as well.

I don't get it.

The ESPN story indeed has Scutaro playing (and batting) second.

And why did no one Photoshop John Clayton and Chris Mortensen? That's the way to go, boys.

Renck notes he will be competing for that 2nd base slot; I don't think he will be backing up Tulo'. This deal is great, as we essentially just go him for a salary dump.

BTW, the Spilly super is up and I'm absolutely thrilled.

Something else tells me this opens the door for a Hanley Ramirez reunion. Well I hope so. Those 2003 BC Autos would double overnight if that happened.

Wow, I hadn't seen that he's signed with Cleveland! Bummer that.

You have an offer in on the spilly?

Yeah, that is a big bummer. What a character, and what a Grand Slam!

I did, and he is just waiting on payment for an off-eBay sale.

Are you going to FanFest?
