Did anyone watch Scutaro play last year?

I didn't want the Jays to give him market value for last year's season, because we can't afford it. The Red Sox can.

This year's SS class is awful.
Scutaro only swings at strikes. Almost exclusively.

We;re talkaling about a guy who posted a BB:K greater than 1 and only swung at 12% of balls outside the zone, making contact w/ 85 percent of 'em.

He also plays pretty decent short stop.

I don't think he'll be quite as good this coming year, but he's an AMAZING piece of the puzzle for a contender.

He is somewhere in between an amazing piece like you said and a pile of garbage like everyone else claims. I think he will be fine, but the Redsox haven't exactly fixed a need for consistent offense so im hoping Lowrie becomes part of a deal for either a bat or more pitching

9:46pm: Price also reports that it is a two-year deal (via Twitter). The signing will result in Toronto receiving a supplemental pick and Boston's first rounder, provided that they do not sign a higher ranking Type A free agent.

9:37pm: The Red Sox have agreed to terms with Scutaro, pending a physical, according to Ed Price of FanHouse.com (via Twitter).

Hes a fantastic player for 1-2 years. At 38 not so much. Im happy as long as its no longer than 2.

I think he will be perfectly acceptable in year 1. Probably good enough to hold off Lowrie and Iglesias in year 2. If the deal is for 3 years, i would be able to accept it because it probably meant that 3rd year was the difference between getting Scutaro or ending up with a low end FA SS, something that the sox cannot win with.

I really hope all these reports accidentally replaced Orlando Hudson with Marco Scutaro. :)

I like it depending on the money/years. I don't understand why everyones is complaining, they signed the best SS available. I mean who else is there besides working out a trade for Hanley or Drew but its been stated that they are not going anywhere. As for the draft pick, this deal looks even better if they sign Holliday (any by this signing you gotta believe is looking pretty possible unless the MFY really want him) which would mean they would basically mean they woudnt give up a pick for Scutaro.

I would have liked to have kept Scutaro since the Jays have no depth at SS. But at this point the draft picks are more valuable, especially for the Jays. If healthy Scoots should be a nice fit for the RedSox.

I don't hate this, probably because I'm still scarred by Lugo/Drew.

I don't love it, because it's Marco Scutaro. However, with no stats to back it up right now, it seemed like he was a pain in the ass AGAINST the Sox last year, so maybe it's addition-by-subtraction.

Overall, as long as it's not too much cash, it's pretty meh.

Two year bridge to Jose Iglesias. This was the least of the Red Sox problems this offseason.

2 years, $10MM. $1MM signing bonus, $1.5MM buyout (or $6MM team option; $3MM player option). Essentially, 2 years $12.5MM which isn't terrible.

Epstein's achilles heel certainly seems to be the SS position. Truthfully, I think Epstein gets way more credit than he deserves for the Sox organization but that's for another day.

Why the hate on Drew? He might be slightly overpaid but he has produced. He just isn't flashy and doesn't talk to the media

I like it...It's 2 years and what 11 million? That's not bad at all, especially considering if he performs like he did last season then he is a huge steal. I am a fan of his K/BB ratio last season (75/90) with a .379 OBP. I'm not sure how his defense is though, can anyone fill me in?

Hard to compare because prior to last season Scutaro had only been a utility IF. In his only season as a full time SS, he posted a 0.9 UZR.

How do you look up UZR? Do they have that stat on baseball reference?
