I've picked up a few game-used cards that I'd like to use the swatches for future custom cards. I've pulled the cards apart and removed the swatches, just playing around with (very basic) mock-up cards.

I pulled one out last night, and noticed there's a thin piece of paper glued to the back with the player's name on it and a code of some sort. It's a Dave Concepcion patch. Are all swatches like this? I've pulled a few others out and haven't noticed this little paper glued to the back before.

Also, is the code a good way to verify that this is legit?

I'm guessing you pulled out a Donruss swatch correct?

That said, I think Donruss was the only company to regularly label the swatches, and I'm not sure if Panini continued the tradition.

There was a bit of a scandal a few years ago with Fleer, IIRC. Someone pulled a Manny Ramirez jersey swatch out of a card that had some other Indians player of lower profile printed on the back like that.

Yep, a 2005 Leaf Certified Mat'ls of Concepcion. It got me worried because I have removed several others without. OK, everything's good!

I hadn't head about this. If true, no wonder they don't label them anymore, and no wonder companies are so vague when stating what the memorabilia on the front of the cards are now-a-days.

That sounds interesting, you should post a scan :)

I had to balance it on the front/back of the card so it didn't stick to the scanner. :)

Ya know, I have wondered how this paper thing worked for the longest time. I can always see the name, color and code number for the lighter colored swatches but never was willing to destroy a card to see what it looked like. All the ones I've seen have matched the player on the card. It makes sense now. Thanks!
