Not sure why...Teixeira will be cemented there for the next 6-7 years. I guess the OF is to hard for him since he is slow.

Report: Montero working out at first base
By Mike Axisa
Surely you’ve heard the news by now, so I’m not going to bother linking to one of the many reports indicating that Yanks’ top prospect Jesus Montero has been working out at first base in Tampa. This isn’t anything out of the ordinary. The Yanks have all of their minor league catchers dabble at first as they get close to the majors, and really they have everyone work out at another position to increase their versatility as they get within shouting distance of the show.

Brett Gardner and Austin Jackson were playing the outfield corners for a while, Ramiro Pena was bouncing around the infield when it seemed like he had a shot to make the team, starters pitch in relief, there’s plenty of other examples. It doesn’t mean they’ve given up on him as a catcher, they’re just getting him some reps at another position since there probably aren’t too many pitchers down there throwing right now. If anything, this is great news. It means the Yanks are confident that Montero’s bat is close to big league ready, and he might see some action in the Bronx this year. · (136)

Maybe it'll mean a speedier callup for him if he served as Tex's backup.

Nick Johnson would be the better backup, at least defensively. Why not backup Jorge? The Yanks did carry 3 catchers on there roster for a bit...Cervelli, Posada and Molina/Cash?

On a serious note, it's quite obvious he is just going to be a full time DH.

The Yankees have enough money to sign whomever they want and not have to risk starting someone out of position or someone who will hurt their defense. If Montero has a good enough start or if Nick Johnson finds a 10,000th way to hurt himself, Montero could be DHing this season.

The article says this isn't out of the ordinary.

Teams bring 800 catchers to camp because they're useful. When they're not catching, they'll dabble around rather than sitting on their but.

The Yankees have good catchers in the system. Montero won't stick. The end.

The Yankees would like to know where they can use Montero in a pinch. The answer is probably catcher and first base.

We knew all this stuff a long, long, long, time ago.

Absolutely no shot that Montero gets any more than a September call-up this year.

Maybe the Yanks are showing that he has flexibility at other position's, since his defense & future at catcher are questionable, for the purposes of trade value? (I'm almost certain this post will be an unpopular one being that the investor's here would hate the idea of Montero leaving the Yanks...but it's a possibility ;) )

another montero post ::facepalm::

your point? It's post worthy.

Sorry your favorite player is a fat, lazy, drunk slob.

sorry? im more thankful for that, just makes him my favorite player even more

He's supposedly cleaned up his act too...so now he'll be twice the player montero is now. I dunno if you caught any Tigers games this year but Cabrera is no slouch defensively at first base either. Yeah, he likes to get drunk but you can't doubt what he does on the field. Sure he's no longer a prospect but that doesn't mean he's not better than your favorite player....

Plus one player has shown he can handle the major league level very well...while the other one has only played AA ball.
Big difference! but we'll see what happens.
