This post revisits the “Strasburg Buy Sell or Hold” post that I wrote on June 18, 2010. The question, obviously was…buy sell or hold Strasburg? Here’s what I wrote on that day:

“….If you have the balls, I’d buy his 1st Bowman Auto NOW and hold until at least the All-Star Break…..”Sell At The All-Star Break” is a good selling strategy. Remember Josh Hamilton? All those HR’s he hit in the derby that year…his cards literally quadrupled on Ebay and Thepit.com. That’s what I would do…pile into that Bowman Auto like there’s no tomorrow and sell at the Break…”

Note the first screenshot in this blog is from June 17, 2010 on Ebay. This is what the Strasburg Bowman Auto’s were selling for…around $485. This is an auction that closed on June 17, 2010, the day before I posted the blog. I advised to buy at that time and that price and sell at the All-Star Break.

Well, the second screenshot is a completed auction just days before the All-Star Break. Notice the Strasburg Bowman Auto’s hit a peak of around $710-$750. That’s a 50% increase from the day I recommended piling into them…and selling them at the All Star Break.

If you listened to that blog, you would have pocketed at least 50% of increase in profit and avoided the terrible crash that we’re seeing now. The Bowman Auto Base Strasburgs have hit a low of around $380 on Ebay and continue in a downward spiral.

The question is, do we buy now that they’ve been cut in half? Personally, I’d wait until the season is over and/or when ALL the Strasburg RC products have been released, wait until Dec-Jan and buy in when the bottom typically occcurs. I’ll be waiting to buy by than, but I wouldn’t be buying now.

While I agree that selling Strasburg at any price point is a good idea, the reason his cards are going down is because of his DL stint and subsequent poor start after coming off the DL. That was not part of your equation.

I can't believe I just read that.

Wasted 2 minutes of my life.

You said NOTHING in your blog that any intelligent person didn't already figure out for themselves earlier this summer.

Way to pat yourself on the back though.

I'd just like to add that most of us here at FCB have 'called a few' good ones in the past, some even much less obvious and to the point than this. However, it's always in bad form to create a thread simply to toot your own blowhorn in such a way. There would/will be plenty of oppertunities within threads to recant the tales of 'good advice', but any other way(such as this) is just asking for attention.

This is just my opinion, so take from it what you will.

You should never advise people to buy, sell, or hold.

What you should say is: For a 25% chance of a possible 50% profit, you are risking a 25% chance of a 25% loss. The numbers make sense.

Anyone can be right and anyone can be wrong, but very few people can spit out the math that identifies your risk/reward.

The best part about math, there's always that 1%.

You must be very careful kobechromecom, when you are a market genius with uncanny foresight other people are bound to be jealous of your success. Don't let these haters affect you.
However, with your talents I believe you should focus on maximizing profit for yourself. Once your secret gets out, you will be single-handedly dictating the market. Imagine if you said "Buy now, sell at the All-Star break" and everyone did just that. Prices would be driven up at buy-in and the market would flood at the All Star break.

Damn, tough crowd! I would not buy just yet, I think they still have quite a ways to fall. I'd wait until the off season to buy. Either way, best of luck.

One simple question to the OP...

Did you take your own advice?

Judging from the lack of "I bought 5 of these in the $500 range and sold all 5 in the $700 range" in the follow-up "pat on the back" post, you didn't even take your own advice so it's kind of moot isn't it?

It's like the investor with a "sure fire" investment opportunity that doesn't invest into it.

And not to come off like a jerk, it was more to do with "dumb luck" and Strasburg's "as advertised" performances than anything else.
