Back in 03 the Cardinals were playing the Diamondbacks. And Miguel (I think) Bautista beans Tino Martinez. Martinez charges the mound. In the process of Tino charging, Bautista gets a baseball back and when Tino is about 3 steps away from him he fires a fastball at Tino`s head. Missing of course. Tino just stops in shock. I have tried finding video of this for some time, with no luck. But I always thought Bautista should have had SEVERE punishment levied against him. What if that ball would have hit Tino in the face? He could have killed him. I thought he should have been banned from the game for life. Harsh? Maybe, but I have literally never seen anything like that happen before, or since. Reminds me of the scene from `Major League: Back To The Minors` with Carlos Liston and that goofy pitcher for the Buzz.

First, of course you feel that way.
You also probably feel every player who hits a HR off a cards pitcher is on steriods and should face a firing squad.

Turn the tables.
Since Martinez chared the mound, lets assume he was going to try annd punch him.
Well since a perfectly landed punch on the temple could kill a man, should Martinez be banned as well?

You see Sam, your bias for the Cards clouds your posts which if well thought out, you may have had a valid point.

I would think any pitcher who did this would deserve a lengthy ban though. Hell, he already beaned the dude, no reason to hit him again.

Hmmmm.

Throwing a punch being compared to throwing a ball at someone's head at upwards of 85 MPH?

Not even close.

You get suspended longer for throwing/taking things to the mound then you do when you just charge the mound and fight.

As for it being bias, I think most people would agree that a HUGE suspension/possible ban would HAVE to happen regardless of player/team.

Sam is biased when it comes to the Cardinals, but I have to agree with him. That is taking things to the next level. He should have gotten a severe suspension, but not a life time banning.

Re: Retro Beanball Fun: Tino vs Bautista.

I wasn`t really going for any homerism with the post, but I admit, I am completely biased toward St. Louis, and I make no apologies for it, lol. But in this instance, I am just recalling something that happened during a game that totally shocked me, because I had never seen anything like it happen before, or since. And believe me, it takes A LOT to shock me. I would love to know what any pitcher would be thinking when they decide to do something like that. Do they not realize the consequences if it were to connect? I could see attempted murder charges or assault with a deadly weapon being filed. Or something along those lines, if it connected. The intent was there, that`s why I would be so harsh with my punishment. Charging the mound is somewhat common in baseball, and very rarely does anything come of it. Just some rolling around. Was Bautista just too ***** to defend himself like a man, or get tackled? The whole situation just amazed me. I wish I had the video.

I never thought I'd say this, but I agree with Sam here. There is a major difference between punching a man in the face and throwing a fastball at his head from point blank range. There's no comparison.

I have been sitting here thinking about it, and I think that this is the worst thing I have ever seen happen on a baseball diamond. Can anyone think of anything worse? I mean, the consequences of this actually succdeding could be literally death. The Bill Lee arm thing, Rocket/Piazza, Pedro/Zim, Delmon, etc. I can`t think of anything worse than a pitcher throwing a fastball at point blank range right at another players head.

off the field it would be considered assault, same goes for some of the brutal stick hits in hockey games. any time something is used as a weapon there needs to be strict disciplinary action. i'm on the side of the fence that I don't think fights should be allowable in any sport.

I just wanted to clarify what I mean when I say `worst thing I have ever seen on a baseball diamond.` I am talking about altercations between players. Not things like Juan Encarnacion or Chris Young getting drilled by line drives, or that minor league coach being killed by a line drive foul.

On the lighter side, my favorite altercations to ever take place on the diamond (if I may). I don't care for full out fights, but I do love seeing bullies get what they have coming to them...

Robin Ventura charges Nolan Ryan: Ryan plunks Ventura, Ventura charges the mound. I don't know what the hell he was thinking, but he did it. I can still see Nolan Ryan waiting for him calmly, only to put him in a headlock and beat the Bejeezus out of Ventura.

Kevin Youkilis charges Rick Porcello: Okay, this one is still new but my GOD. Kevin Youkilis ran his wide self out to the mound and got TOSSED. He threw his helmet at Porcello and got a semi Greco-Roman "hello" for his trouble.

And finally, I present you with this:

If Tino Martinez was a hitter with any talent he'd line one back up the middle next time he faced Bautista.
