That's an interesting concept. I'm going the opposite route. From now on when I get a new bubble mailer I'm going to knock a star or two off. My feedback will say "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle." I'm working on reducing my carbon footprint, and this seems like an easy way to help others work on reducing theirs!

Thanks for the awesome idea!

If you honestly think people resuse envelopes to help the environment, then I have beachfront property in Arkansas that I'd love to sell you. If you wanted to help the environment (and that was your motive) then you'd recycle envelopes at a recycling center and use recycled envelopes that are marked as such. Or - better yet - not take up a method of income that involves so much paper waste.

By the way.
<--- If you're worried about your star rating, then feelf ree to block me. I regularly give all 5's as it's a VERY rare occasion I received a reused mailer. I also don't buy a whole lot, and - chances are - being blocked on eBay by every member on this site would probably hinder my buying 0%.

If you provide free shipping, ship it to me in the anal cavity of an elephant for all I care. If it makes to to me just fine, awesome! I'll wait for the sucker to crap it out. If you charge me for S&H to "cover materials" then I expect my cost to go towards covering material cost and shipping charges. I'm not paying S&H for you to make an extra buck or to pay your gas. Full stars ratings, to me, is for excellent service - not for playing par for the course. If you're a quick shipping with fair shipping for the type of shipping I receive then you'll receive 5 stars. Charge me $3.50 for a reused envelope and ~$1 shipping then you're gonna get 4.

Bang on me all you want, but I don't like rewarding people for scraping by with the minimum they can do to get through a transaction successfully.

Just for discussion purposes, if you are looking to buy something, and shipping says $3, and in their listing they state, "Your item will ship in a reused bubble mailer........" are you 1) going to pass on the item, 2) going to buy and leave full 5 stars for being up front, or 3) still ding the stars?

Depends on how much I wanted the item. If I want it, I buy it accepting the full terms of his noted shipping methods. If he ships it relatively quickly, and I receive it in an appropriate amount of time then I have no problem giving him 5 stars. Of course there are going to be exceptions.

There are many other examples of how the same concept of all this can be applied to other situations.. but because everyone here coddles their star ratings like they coddle their own manhood everyone takes offense.

Just a scenario: You go to a restaurant and order a bowl of soup.. and this is good damn soup. It's the best bowl of soup you've ever had in your LIFE. You get to the bottom of the bowl, and it's filthy. It has crusted over lasagna sauce... it has a hair... all stuck to the bottom of the bowl.
It didn't affect the taste of the soup at all, and it won't cause you any illness.

Do you complain? Do you ask for a comp meal?

After all, the soup got to you just fine.. and when you paid for it - you paid for the soup.. not the bowl. The bowl was just being "reused". Would you not argue that the bowl and its contents are what you pay for when you pay for a bowl of soup?

And you can say "no" or "that's not the same!" all you want.. but it's the same concept. When you pay for an item - and you pay all costs as ADVERTISED with that item (shipping methods being paid for with S&H) - you expect to be left with no shortcuts.

Now, offer me a free bowl of soup - if I eat it then I accept anything I may fin dwrong with it. If I do find something wrong - I push it away.

I am on board with Adam here. If you charge me shipping and handling that is $3 or higher...you have better send me something you actually had to pay for yourself, otherwise you are just a ******. I don't mind getting a reused mailer, as long as you don't charge me for it. I send my items in a brand new bubble mailer everytime. I don't do a lot of sales, but on eBay I also don't charge for shipping. I might be losing money, but my ratings are good. I take the good with the bad there. But come on man...how ******* is it to charge someone for something you never put a penny into?

Exactly, Alex.
I get brand new padded mailers, penny sleeves and toploaders from guys with free shipping fairly often. Now, that may spoil me and my "requirements" for 5 stars... but don't kid yourself by thinking you are in the same league as those sellers if you charge me $3+ for shipping and I get a reused envelope with tape all over it.

If you're THAT concerned about saving the environment, put it in your listing. Either tell me you're going to be reusing (so I make the choice to still purchase) or tell me you're "green" and charge me $4 to cover the cost of those higher-priced recycled envelopes.

I think this thread is just more evidence that some folks spend way too much time thinking about mundane details that most of the world couldnt care less about.

"oh my goodness, he made 18 cents on postage!"

2 stars.

I'm paying for the item, not how nice the bubble mailer is.

Where did I say 2 stars? Come on, man. A little drama queen-ish.
If I'm paying for how nice the item is, then don't charge me shipping and handling. You charge me for S&H I want S&H.
I'd love to own a store in your town. I'd overcharge you knowing that - as long as the item/service is good - that you'd take it in the end and not say a word.

I give 5 stars for prompt/honest/worthy service. And, believe it or not, there's 5 stars in that "5 star rating". Just because I don't give someone a 5 doesn't mean I give them a 1, 2 or a 3.

You will be the first one on here bitching about how you paid $4 for shipping and the seller sent your **** in a PWE. Heck, he may have even paid for the envelope himself...or maybe he didn't...you don't know. It is all about not being a god damn jerk when mailing **** out. It's simple man.

Yeah, man. If you reuse envelopes - put it in your damn listing. Unlike many people - I do read listings. If I choose to still make the purchase then I'm obviously not going to punish a seller on that alone.
Holy crap. All of the "big bad man doesn't give 5 stars every time" is a little over the top.

P.S. It's been a long time since I've given less than 5's across the board... but, like I said earlier, I read auctions and often deal with excellent sellers. If you skate by doing the minimum you have to do to get the item to the buyer successfully, then don't sell to me. Period. My eBay user name is to the left. You're not breaking my heart by blocking me - I promise.

What made you say this? I don't think I've ever seen him complain about anything. He debates a lot but doesn't complain.

No, its simple to decide if you're ok with the amount of shipping before bidding, getting your package, opening it and the card is in the expected condition.

i do not and will not examine to make sure i've gotten the correct amount of money spent when i have already decided i was bidding on the item.

My expectation is i receive my package in the correct condition and with the correct amount of postage.

If i get a postage paid envelope, you will get 0 stars and i'll ask for a refund.

Correct, I will never complain about these things because it doesnt matter enough. I judge before i bid if i'm ok with how much i'm paying to ship.

Perhaps BGS could make some money grading bubble mailer condition...

Then we can ship their BGS 9.5 bubble mailers in a used bubble mailer.
