Its the time of year in football where everything seems to be winding down. The Saints won the SuperBowl with a very impressive victory over the Indianapolis Colts. While many football fans are feeling the offseason blues, football card collectors are rejoicing with the upcoming releases of some of the most anticipated products of the year. One of those products is 2009 SP Authentic Football. Each year, collectors run like a kick returner scoring a touchdown to pick up these cards. This year's offering is fresh off the delivery trucks so I thought we could take a look at what 2009 SP Authentic is going to offer collectors. Hike! Here we go.
Each box contains 24 packs and each pack contains 5 cards. Each box touts three autographed cards with one being an autographed memorabilia card, likely a Rookie Authentics Patch autographed card. There are 12 boxes per case. This year, Upper Deck has brought back the By the Letter Autographed Manufactured Letter Patch cards and they have also introduced the Dynasties autographed set which features an autograph and a manufactured commemorative patch card of players who played on some of the greatest NFL dynasties ever! While I am not really a fan of the manufactured patch cards, these cards look very nice and should be an instant hit with collectors.
The facts about the product are:
Base set-100 cards
Base set shortprints-100 cards(these are the horizontally designed base cards with some combinations of multiple players)
Rookie Authentics-100 cards
Rookie Auto Patch-34 cards
Rookie Authentic Signatures-70 cards
Then you have the autographed insert sets which will deliver 2 cards per box of any of the following sets.
- Rookie Authentics Signatures (# to 999 or less)
- SP Authentic Autos
- SP Authentic Autos Parallel (# to 25)
- Chirography Autos
- Chirography Autos Parallel (Varied #)
- Chirography Dual Autos (Varied #)
- Chirography Triple Autos (Varied #)
- Chirography Quad Autos (# to 10)
- Sign of the Times Signatures
- Sign of the Times Signatures Parallel (# to 25)
- Sign of the Times Dual Signatures (Varied #)
- Sign of the Times Triple Signatures (Varied #)
- Sign of the Times Quad Signatures (Varied #)
- SP Immortal Signatures (# to 25)
- SP Immortal Dual Signatures (# to 15)
- SP Immortal Triple Signatures (# to 10)
- SP Immortal Quad Signatures (# to 5)
The autographed memorabilia cards fall 1 per box and you may find one of the following:
- Rookie Authentics Auto Patch (# to 999 or less)
- Rookie Authentics Auto Patch Parallel (# to 25)
- Rookie Authentics Auto Patch NFL Logo Parallel (# to 1)
- SP Rookie Super Patch Signatures (Varied #)
- SP Authentic Dynasties (Varied #)
- SP By the Letter Signatures (Varied #)
I really like the look of some of the inserts this year. As an added bonus, Upper Deck continued the America's Team insert set that chronicles the Dallas Cowboys. Some of the cards even feature game used jersey swatches. Thats not too bad considering you could hit an Emmitt Smith or Troy Aikman jersey card!
One thing that is new this year as mentioned above is the addition of the Super Patch autographed rookie cards. These cards feature an oversized patch swatch with an autograph ON the patch! These cards are going to be gobbled up quick by collectors looking for their favorite players!
Now, let me give you a rundown of my thoughts on this product. Many collectors will notice that the boxes are LOADED with base cards. The base set design is very nice and features full color photography on a very eye appealing design. Each card features either gold foil(base cards and SP cards) or silver foil for the Rookie Authentics Rookie cards. The cards have a very good look and feel to them. Each box should contain a handful of the SP cards, as well as about 4-5 Rookie Authentic non autographed cards. The one thing I really like about this product is that all autos are ON CARD which touches the hearts of many diehard collectors who love the on card signatures. Its nice to get a few autographed cards in each box with one being a really nice hit of a rookie patch auto, by the letter signature card or a Dynasties patch card. Now, here's where I may ruffle some feathers. It seems that there are a handful of redemptions in this year's product. Most noticably is the Rookie Auto Patch card of Percy Harvin. While it isn't suprising that Harvin wasn't available to sign, whatwith the Vikings making a deep run into the playoffs, you still have to think though that Upper Deck would have made a better effort in trying to acquire some of his autos as well as a handful of other players throughout the set. It's still not too bad though as there should be something for everyone with this product.
Overall, I am still a little lukewarm to the product. I think that there are way to many different subsets and parallels of each subset and it can become a tedious process to put a masterset together for your rookie player that you collect. My review of the product is as follows:
Box 1 Notable Hits
Jason Smith Super Patch autograph (1 color) 99/99
Brian Hartline Rookie Authentics Autograph
Box 2 Notable Hits
Mohammed Massoquoi Rookie Autographed Patch(2 colors) /999
Earl Campbell SP Authentics Autographs
Louis Delmas Rookie Authentics Autographs
I hit several Brett Favre base cards from the two boxes and a handful of SP's and rookie cards. Hopefully, collectors will grab this product up and head for the endzone as it really is a good product this year, as it has been in recent years. Good luck and check it out for yourself!
Scans will be up shortly to showcase this product. Thanks for reading!
