A few years ago I posted a photo for the day for probably six months or so on these boards until I just ran out of time to do so. I enjoyed posting these pictures but found myself with almost no time to do them. While the demands on my time are still there, I have continued to electronically collect great sports photos and decided to post one here today.

This photo is from the 1969 All Star Game held at RFK Stadium in Washington DC and features the starting line up for the National League and it's manager Red Schoendienst. When I look at this picture I wonder where is Clemente, Banks and Rose as it seems odd to have an All Star game without these big names of that era. In checking the box scores for this game it appears these greats were all riding the pine at the start of the game while waiting their turn to participate. In this photo we see (l to r) Schoendienst, Matty Alou, Don Kessinger, Henry Aaron, Willie McCovey, Ron Santo, Cleon Jones, Johnny Bench and Felix Millan while Steve Carlton warms up in the bullpen.

This game was due to start on the evening of July 22 but was postponed until the next day due to heavy rains in the DC area. Then President Nixon was due to throw out the first pitch but was denied this honor due to the delay as he head to head to the west coast so that he could be on hand to greet the returning Apollo 11 astronauts who would be on their return trip from the first ever moon landing.

The National League would go on to beat the junior circuit 9-3 with Carlton getting the win and Mel Stottlemyre of the Yankees being hung with the loss. Scoop McCovey would be awarded the game MVP award after going 2-4 with two home runs in the game while Johnny Bench would clout another round tripper for the Nationals.

An interesting side note to this game, to me at least, is that the first base umpire would be World War 2 hero and prisoner of war Augie Donatelli who would eventually become my cousins father in law. Although I never got a chance to meet him I have heard many stories of him and his post baseball years.

I hope you enjoy the photo and thank you for indulging me.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I will post more photos but not probably not on a daily basis like the past. I enjoy showing off this stuff and hopefully I wont bore you with it.

As for this picture, Yes, I love the old school socks but I always wondered what it was Aaron was looking at so give him that expression on his face. Was he yawning? Was there something in the dugout he saw? Who knows?

I guess I didn't see, in the past, when you posted photos on a daily basis; sounds like that would be a thread I would have loved to view. I'm not sure about other individuals on this board, but I know I like collecting photos (of course most of them are of Brooks Robinson) and thought that may make a cool thread as well. Don't know how many people would be interested in photos, but I know I'd enjoy viewing other collectors photos of their favorite player/s or teams.

I personally like the old school style of wearing the stirrups/socks and wear them up. Not much of a fan of the pajama type pants.

I'd wager a guess that Hank is talking to Willey in the photo.

thanks for the thread revamp and I'll say I missed it and thought it was always a really great read

About this photo: wish baseball (all major sports) was still like this.

Another striking thing is that, although different, how similar each uniform is to the other

..was gonna say the same thing- gray flannels.

LOVE this pic!! Look how Willie towers over the others, including Hank. Santo has the "gun show" look. Bench, still a young 'un, looking somewhat awed by the situation. 5 HOFers plus Carlton. Where was Willie Mays in '69???

Thanks for sharing!!
