A lot of guys sign right up until the end and often families are returning unsigned items with notes about the passing.
There is a story about a brief Mariner pitcher named Rick Anderson who supposedly died with a fan letter in his hand. Not sure I believe that kind of detail would have been captured. This is on Wikipedia, so there is that to consider. Apparently he ballooned to 400+ after his playing days and died of heath related issues in 1989.
