"So anyway, I was holding back some key research on this until harryhundini posted his picture -- but here's what we found. Because these are playing cards, they have an extra coating on them so they hold up during play. (If you don't know what I mean, go out and buy some bicycle playing cards and you'll see what I mean). Anyway, the autos were signed BEFORE the coating was applied, so they wouldn't 'smudge' during play. This is how you truly verify if it's real. You hold it to the side, look at the reflection at an angle, and you can tell the difference."

Without a doubt.

@Graham- I don't think anyone ever questioned the authenticity of the signature?.. I know I didn't. It's legit.

I'm not that big of a collector, but yeah that thing is a joke. I totally agree with the statement that I'd much rather have the '92 Elite signed and serial numbered to 5,000 than this card.

Right on Snyper.
Card is legit.
Blowout boards & their fools are the knuckleheads we are chuckling at.
No jealousy here on them finding the Holy Grail worth 6 G's.

Still working on an answer. Surprised that finding what looks to be a third copy did not create a buzz. A friend has recollections but can't remember the print run before consulting notes. I felt all along there would be a run in an increment of 100 at minimum. It takes money, time and a contract to get a deal done like this. Cal is not going to take the time to sign two copies of a card for a national group unless it is a fundraiser. Not trying to be harsh but it is naive to think there are two copies.

On another note I love when folks dismiss credible information because it is a message board. Hoping to get info tonight to share.

"I know of someone who opened over 1,000 decks from big lots (at .15 cents each awhile back) and didn't get a single auto."

That's a lot of playing cards....

I think it's hillarious that the BO boards are accusing you Ripken guys of try to devalue the card when the whole thread seems a terrible attempt to hype a a moderately valued card. The buyer doesn't want the price released because there is no sale, he could give a range and not break his supposed promise. Idiotic in my opinion not to acknowledge a price range and move on. Funny to watch it all fall apart for the seller as the Freedom Cardboard knowledge spread through the thread.

If the card was sold I hope the buyer didn't take out a second mortage on the house.

Not sure why he won't post the price?

Either the seller sold the card for a very low price or the buyer paid a crap ton more than it's worth and is embarrassed to say what he paid.

After researching I have a feeling that this is going to come down to an old article in a Tuff Stuff or Beckett. I guess I don't fault someone in thinking it could be scarce as there is little to no information out there about the card. However, no need to pay 4 digits IMHO.

"Do you think your high-end Ripken collectors have even heard of this card? The one that was sold by a member here was thought to have the only known one to exist and now there is just one more. If there are only two in existence it is possible that your collectors may have never known about these cards existing, correct? Or is that just not possible? It is not an arbitrary value, it would be the market value. Just because you and your high-end Ripken collectors would not pay that for this card does not mean that another collector would not. "

Tell me, who in their right mind would pay 4 figures for an oddball Ripken auto who is NOT a Ripken collector? Is someone going to buy it for their se-----oh wait.
