Hey folks. Long story short my domain hosting group did not automatically renew my web address. With that being said someone jumped in and bought my domain name for my Ripken minor league site. Not sure if someone picked it up as a favor for me or if they're trying to get rich quick. My hosting provider is going to remove content from the .com address and point the content to the .net address. I wanted to pass along the information to everyone.

You can still get it back after 60 - 90 days after it expires I think.

I think there is a pretty good shot at getting it back. I mean it's not important enough to pay a big fee if the owner tries to get me to pay. Having the information out there is what is important, not the address.

Did you perform a "Whois" search to find out if the guy is listed or not?

Yep, someone in Moscow.

Don't feel too bad. For my work site, I wanted a .com extension. Seeing it was already registered, I tried emailing the author of the site if they wanted to part with it, since it's been over 5 years since new content had shown up. I received an email a few days later asking for $10K for the name. I bought the .net domain in no time. It just isn't worth the price sometimes.

The people who bought the name sent me an e-mail with their asking price for the name. I did go ahead and get the .net address and the site updated. I wonder why the people who bought the .com did not go ahead and buy up the .net address as well. Either way the site has been updated with a new look:

People are pricks sometimes.

Who else besides Cal himself is going to pay an outrageously inflated price for a website name

Even though the domain is owned by someone else, chances are the nameservers haven't been changed. If that's the case, that's why you're still seeing the .com page instead of something different.

One the .net site is active and moved over by the host, the .com page sould cease to exist. At least as far as displaying the current site, that is.

How come all of your content is still on the http://www.ripkenintheminors.com?

The site is hosted through freewebs.com and I am not sure why the old info is still posted on the .com after changing to the .net address. I was told that I should tell them that I have an intellectual copyright on the material and get them to remove it. When I last checked the .com site although some info was there it was obvious that the site was no longer functioning.

Thanks all, I appreciate the kindness. I've spent the bulk of my night trying to figure out how to get my information off a website that someone else owns.

Greetings folks, hope all is well.

Long story short, I was able to work out a deal with the group in Russia that picked up the site. Through the process I learned that the site was getting a lot more traffic than I thought, which is a great thing. Although the main page has a counter at 16,000 the counter only reflected the hits on that page. Let's just say that the number of hits in the past 12 months were more than 16K. In any case I was able to work out a deal with the group that picked up the .com domain address. I have worked on things and the .com address should be live in the next 24-48 hours. If/When things work it is my understanding that a person will be able to get to the site using the .com or .net address.

Thanks to all of you who either publicly or privately offered your help. That generosity truly means a lot!
