[h=1]Astros Owner Open To Signing Clemens[/h] By Ben Nicholson-Smith [August 24, 2012 at 10:45am CST]
Astros owner Jim Crane told Mark Berman of FOX 26 Sports in Houston that he is open to the idea of signing 50-year old Roger Clemens. The Astros have not been contacted about signing Clemens this year, but they’re preparing for the possibility, Berman reports. The Astros were in attendance at a recent workout to watch Clemens, who signed with the independent Sugar Land Skeeters this week.

Crane said he doesn’t aim to set up a publicity stunt for the sake of selling a few extra tickets. He’d seek approval from MLB before completing a deal with Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner. Clemens already has a personal services contract with the Astros, Berman notes.

So Clemens can come back, log an official MLB appearance with the Astros, and his HOF eligibility gets bumped back another five years? Common opinion on the local sports talk radio shows is that he's doing all this to distance himself from the other steroid-era players who are now coming up for HOF voting.

For someone who's reportedly so concerned about his legacy and the whole "Rocket" persona, this seems like a really Canseco-ish thing to do. If he does make it back to the majors and gets lit up, he'll become another baseball sideshow and completely tarnish his legacy.

And it would only make things much worse for him, as the voters will see right through this pathetic attempt and won't allow themselves to be played or fools.

Although its certainly reasonable to think this is what Clemens is doing - heck I even thought this myself - I really don't think its going to change the minds of the voters in the long run.

Actually if he does well in the MLB again, I'm just going to think he's still taking PEDs LOL.

haha, its looking more and more like Clemens will return to the Astros.

In his latest column, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark writes that Astros players have told their friends on other teams that they already think Roger Clemens' arrival in Houston is a done deal. An old friend of Clemens himself also told Stark that he is convinced The Rocket is gearing up for a big league comeback. Here's more from Stark..

Maybe look at the schedule. The Astros end the season on the road against the Cubs, doubt he would travel.

Last home stand is Pirates and Cards, if the Pirates are out of it this would be a good place to pitch him since StL hits well for average.

It is my opinion him pitching at the big league level is less about his HOF clock and more a FU to the Feds, ie screw you bastards I can still pitch so get off my crank. Pitching for the Astros would strengthen his work out ethic platform.

I think it's both. I fully believe he's doing it to have a "better shot" at being a 1st ballot HOF. It's highly possible a guy like Bonds, or someone linked to steroids, is going to be in the HOF in the next 5-6 years. If that's the case, Clemens is easily in. I still think the writers will snub him 1st ballot though.

I agree with you also that it will be a big middle finger to everyone that doubts/doubted him.
