I was sitting around reading some old Beckett's this morning and comparing some old "Hot List" cards to where they are now. With the whole Steroid black cloud and injuries holding him down onver the past season or two, does anyone seeing his SP Foil RC reaching past prices? I know he'll probably become the all-time HR leader, but I don't know if that's even enough.

Any thoughts?

Sure why not?

if the economy ever turns around, and people have more money to waste on cardboard, i could see it happening.

Since eBay became the world's largest sports card shop, Beckett magazine turned into terrible barometer for card prices.

Anyway, it is a very "what have you done for me lately" hobby, and while Rodriguez may be hot for once in the playoffs he's become a different personality and sometimes that is enough to sour people.

Like TBP said, however, once the economy turns around prices across the board should rebound. There's no telling if they'll get back to 2007 value though.

I don't think any RC has fallen as much as the 99 Ultimate Victory Alfonso Soriano. I remembering getting up to $120 for these. I had 4 left and just sold a lot of 3 for $15. ::facepalm::

Yeah but a lot of the 'middlemen' have also left Soriano and moved onto other cards, inflating their value instead :)

I had forgotten about the McGwire RC....not sure how it slipped my brain. Unfortunately, the economy has some to do with it, but I also think we can blame the card companies too. Every new release typically brings down a card value from a past set as they continue to produce subsets # to 10 or less. This brings another question, other than prospecting, can you really invest in the cardboard?

How about 1990 Leaf Frank Thomas?

Paid $85 for my 1st copy.

DLVD?

Serious question?

Hey, it was just a joke.

I remember paying $200 for a raw mint Rickey Henderson rookie in 1991. No way I could get that for it unless it was slabbed today.

December Beckett 2000 has Sosa at $80; must've hit 100 during 1998 & 1999.

In 1998 I was working at a card shop in Marquette Heights IL. We had McGwire 85 Topps and Sosa 90 Leaf rookies marked at $25 and $10 respectively. When the HR crazy started we were getting $250-$400 for the McGwires and $80-110 for the Sosa's. Even offcentered McGwire's were commanding $225-275. It was nuts. We had a handfull of both. Thank you PEDs

The Arod's their peak were in the $125-135 range raw. 8's were bringing $120 and I bought two of them. Now they sell around $40ish

I bought a snaptite of cards off a kid when I was running a shop and inside was a 90 Leaf Thomas. Must have been 2000-2001 or so. Anyways, sent it in to BGS and got a 9.5.
Sold it to my Thomas collector for $425 ::facepalm:: :D

Also remember selling the 2001 Upper Deck Tiger Woods RC to a bar owner for $100 a pop. I would get them in trade and cash in.

Those were the days.
