Round five starts in about 24 hours. It will be the Junior final, as well as one more round of the Senior loser's bracket.





This round consists only of loser's bracket matchups---the bracket is behind the winner's bracket (more rounds in it, due to the nature of double elimination tournaments), so there's a bit of catching up to do. Round five will include the Junior finals, and, with round six, the Senior winner's bracket will begin. This also divvies up the matchups such that there will only 4-5 for the next three rounds, and less after that.

Five matchups this round: if you've voted already, I'd recommend skimming through the blogs again to refresh and check for updates. If you havn't, enjoy checking them out! Great stuff here...

Agreed 100%. I try to make it a point to skim through blogs before each round, especially when I'm having a tough time making choices. Many people are constantly updating their collections, so this is a must.

Very hard, because I've voted for both in the past. The Smoltz collection offers much more variety than the Denker collection as far as cards go, but the Denker collection trumps the Smoltz collection as far as memorabilia goes, by far. To me the Smoltz collection is more attractive with the 90's inserts and the patches.

Clark vs. Clark. I'm going to go with ajw here, because his collection contains much more than just cards. He;s got pretty much everything there is to have of Will Clark.

To me this is a tougher matchup than meets the eye. The Butler collection has an incredible completion percentage at 96%! Wow! I would say one of my favorite pieces in his collection is the contract signed by Hank Aaron. It's pretty incredible to have his favorite player on that contract and have the home-run kings autograph on it. Ugh this is a really hard decision. I'm pretty torn here. The Zambrano collection offers an incredible amount of eye appeal as well as very rare cards. It's hard to pick either. Coin flip time. Zambrano is heads, Butler tails. It's heads.

Most of these matchups were really, really close, and I don't think any of them were easy for me to decide. Several of them I went back and forth on, and was far more indecisive than in previous rounds.

I really like Boxbreaker44's game used items, but, unfortunately, Denker has few cards. Blitzerlover, collecting Smoltz, has far more cards to choose from, and does so well, with a nice variety of autos, rare inserts and game used cards.


Senior:

Tough matchup, in large part because it's incredibly hard to get a big picture view of both collections. i.e. Philip J. Fry, I'd really like to see some overall stats (not just each individual year, and ajw, I'd like to see stats to begin with. That's not to discount either collection; it just means that for the contest, it is really hard to judge them; I ended up voting by the general impression the cards had on me.

As much as I love Zambrano38's collection, TNP777's completion does it for me.


Jeff D: Prince Fielder

Both Zan and Jeff D don't try to have complete collections, but rather pick and choose nice pieces of Greenberg and Fielder. While I really do like Zan's collection, I voted for Jeff D because of the advantage he has in number of cards, a large proportion of which are high quality.


nevermore: Paul O'Neill

This was a really tough one, and I went back and forth several times, even starting and scrapping explanations of why I voted for each of you. When push comes to shove, however, I voted for nevermore due to both his high completion percentage, especially from O'Neill's playing days, and how he has kept up with many of the modern issues.

He received a bye this round. There are four collectors left in the winner's bracket that are undefeated to this point, and he is one of them.

No, he has not lost. As described in the original post, this round is just for the loser's bracket (those with one loss), as it is playing catchup to the winner's bracket (with double elimination, those with one loss go through more rounds than those without losses). The winner's bracket resumes in two rounds.
