I'm on the camp who feel the wins and loses don't tell the story with Halladay. He was arguably the best pitcher in baseball for half a decade or more, something very few pitchers can say. I'd have him in long before Pettitte (who I don't think is a HOFer) or Mussina (who I am on the fence on) because of his dominance.

I'll miss him. He can fly planes without now without getting a hard time from MLB.

Also, does anyone take anything Keith Law says seriously? The dude's a troll and its painfully obvious these days. Maybe that can should go back to being a foodie.

Congrats to Doc on a great career. I always respected how we went back to Single A to rebuild his throwing motion and came back to dominate.

Halladay is not a Hall of Famer.

Sorry to all the Phillies and Jays homers around.

Doc Halladay: 390 GS, 2749 IP, 2117 K, 3.38 ERA, 203-105, 67 CG, 20 SO

Doc Gooden: 410 GS, 2800 IP, 2293 K, 3.51 ERA, 194-112, 68 CG, 24 SO

I love how people are inevitablty going to say that you can't compare Gooden and Halladay because Gooden used drugs and that somehow negates what he's done.

If anything, the fact that Gooden was on drugs while doing all this makes it more impressive

Short career?, he pitched for 16 years

To be fair, five of those seasons (3 at the beginning and 2 at the end) didn't do much to impact his HoF candidacy in a positive manner.

Halladay sure had a great peak, but may be lacking longevity (and is without the post-season opportunities that often count as extra credit).

I believe he is a HoFer for sure. Long run of dominance where he was generally acknowledged to be the best in the biz. Never realized Gooden had the stats he did. That was a flame that burned bright but a little too short I believe.

Yeah, no kidding. He is 5th in active IP, behind Pettitte/Buehrle/Hudson/Sabathia. Can't see any active pitcher that will surpass him, besides a Verlander/Hernandez which is several years from now if it happens.

(Active = including pitchers retiring this year)
10th in active ERA
4th in active wins
1st in active W/L%
8th in active WHIP
2nd in active BB/9 (Dan Haren being the only SP who walks less batters than Doc)
1st in active CG (By an absolute ton, 67 to CC's 37)
1st in active SHO (20, 5 more than Carpenter)
5th in active K/BB
4th in active ERA+

If the only knock anyone has against Doc is that he had a "short" career, then let's just say I'm glad you guys aren't the ones doing the voting for the HOF. This is new to me that close to 3,000 IP and near 400 GS would be considered short. Halladay was one of if not the best starting pitcher in his era. Pure dominance for over a decade. He was a pleasure to watch.

HPC - Why isn't he a HOFer? I notice you didn't add any argument with your statement...

I believe he was an amazing pitcher. completely dominant and did not want my team to face him.. The career stats are great but along the lines of todd helton. Hall of really good

While I agree that Halladay is a member of the Hall of Really Good, I do think Helton is a HOFer. Baseball Reference's tools seem to think so as well:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/heltoto01.shtml

Whereas they don't for Halladay:

I think Helton's defensive abilities will overshadow his "Coors Field" inflation, and he'll get in after a few ballots. Let's put it this way: I'd rather see Schilling than Halladay in the HOF, and I don't think Schilling is a HOFer.

Ah, Roy Halladay. One of the best pitchers I have had to pleasure to watch. Class act all the way, and I give him a ton of respect for signing the one-day contract so he can retire a Blue Jay.

He is one player we don't need to make a HOF thread for. We all know the answer. I'd be surprised if anyone has a legit argument against his election.

Only 200ish wins...Dead arm and not that great the last few years

Its the Hall Of Fame, not the Hall Of Very Good

Then I guess you don't think Craig Biggio is worthy of the Hall of Fame? Boom.
I'd rather have a great player like Halladay who is brilliant for a shorter period and knows when to retire, than a good player like Biggio, who holds on years past his prime, hitting .250 his final few years, so he can reach a milestone number like 3,000 hits to magically become deemed a Hall of Famer.
Quality > Quantity
