Honestly, I think she just did not get the concept or understand what she was being asked to do. Rather than put forth the effort and quality involved to make a nice sketch card she simply thought she was being paid for her name and quick scribble, like the motivating factor was to pull a Tempy Moore card and not necessarily a nice looking sketch card... Either way, these were accepted and approved for pack out so any blame is obviously not to be placed on her. Other than making ugly sketch cards that is...

This is gold. Pure gold. My favorite is Gary Carter's jerry curl. They all look like a mix of the player they're supposed to be and a Neanderthal.

I thought Gary Carter looked like the guy from the Men In Tights bridge crossing scene. "A toll is a toll, and a roll is a roll, and if we don't get no tolls, then we don't eat no rolls." I might buy the card and add a beard...

As hideous as her sketches are, at least Tempy spells the names correctly:

I don't think it takes "being an art critic" to be able to discern artistic quality when it comes to photo representation of a subject.
I'd love to hear people XXXXXing about others "acting like experts" the next time ANY player gets their performance dogged. I feel sorry for people who think themselves so disqualified of offering an opinion based on visual evidence that they'd project that ineptitude on others.

Some of these are undefendable. They look like a child drew them while waiting for the bus.


She obviously has talent, but it's clear that she didn't do her best work with 90% of this set.

You know what would happen if I had a client call at the end of the day with their network down that I felt "rushed" to get done - maybe because they had an evening presentation - so I did a half-assed butchering of the job?
Amazing that "being rushed" is an acceptible excuse when money is payed for a certain quality of service.

Well, in those examples - the artist painted in a determined (and classically recognized) style. You don't just... put some crap on a medium and say 'Well, it kinda' looks like expressionism - so I'm going to go with that."

There are two sources of blame here:

1) Tempy- for doing a worse-than-half-assed job on these sketch cards. Whether or not she was in a rush to get them done shouldnt matter. Every one of hers that has been posted here is an abomination and look nothing like the people she was payed to represent. She is very capable of doing great work, as evidenced by the Clemente, but did not. If she couldnt meet the deadline to the best of her abilities, she should not have accepted the job offered by Leaf.

2) Leaf- I personally feel the majority of the blame lies here. Why Leaf would put those cards into packs is beyond me. Some of them do not even look like she finished penciling them. It's an an embarassment for them to even be associated with these jokes and to pass them on to collectors with the expectation of statisfaction is unbelievable. Then to label them 1/1's on top of that...geez. I'm actually glad there is only one of them in existence.

I have to agree. The quality reasoning is one thing, but them getting "passed" and into the product is beyond me. Maybe they didn't have any spare that they could use to fill the production run... That would be a good idea for next time - up the number of commissioned artists and weed out the lower quality ones.

What's really interesting to me is that as bad as a lot of these look, the images definitely look like the player.

Like the Hank Aaron is weird looking, but I could tell you who it was with one look if I didn't know the player. Same for all the others. No, they don't look like photographs, but somehow these crudely sketched line drawings pretty closely resemble the player.

It's art. They don't all have to look like photographs. Tempy has a different style, which a lot of people here obviously don't like. I'm not a huge fan of it, but it's pretty hard to make something look both bad and recognizable at the same time. I'm not defending her, Leaf, or anyone else. Yeah, they look shoddy at first, but they're definitely the work of a professional artist.
