Russ Martin is a low cost (Francisco Cervelli) backup option and insurance policy.

If Montero hits this spring, Montero starts this spring.

Russ Martin will not be standing in anyone's way.

2010 .248/.347/.332 with 5 homers and 26 RBI

If that scares you into selling Montero, you didn't really believe in him in the first place.

Oh, and he's not on the Yankees yet. This board scares easily.

My question was more in regard to the possibility of Montero being traded for Greinke or another such player than it was about him being blocked by Martin. I don't have much Montero myself, just wondering how those of you who are stocked up feel.

Well, Montero won't be traded for Greinke because of Greinke's no trade clause.
Actually Greinke said a few days ago that he would wave it for the Yankees.

Here is the big problem with Jesus Montero. HE CANT CATCH IN THE BIG LEAGUES. The Yankees need a catcher, an actual catcher, not a hitter who plays catcher.

Yeah this is what I thought I had heard. Doesn't even have to be just Greinke though, it could be Montero for anyone. He's an immensely valuable trade piece to any team that needs a big bat. The Yankees may struggle to use him because their lineup is already packed with players who can be slotted in at 1B and DH...but not all teams can say that.

Greinke is a head case. If he was stresed out about the KC deal, could you imagine him in NY? No way he comes to the Yankees.

The Yankees can deal with his poor catching if his bat is on fire. No one cares about his catching for crying out loud!!!!!!!! The dude is a freak and he is better than Posada and Cervelli put together at this point. Montero's catching skills have long improved since his days as a rookie. His arm is very effective and he needs a little improvement on blocking. He is the best and the cheapest alternative for the Yankees. Frig Russ Martin, etc. It is Montero's job to lose.

Actually, they do care about his catching, bc last year in the playoffs they couldnt throw anybody out. And no, he isnt better than either one of them behind the plate.

He most certainly is. Posada can barely stand on his own two feet anymore and Cervelli may be a tad better defensively, Montero is the all around better player. The Yanks can live with mediocre catching if he hits .300 with 30 HR and 100 RBI. If he puts up Miguel Cabrera type numbers the Yanks will not give a damn. Agree with me on that?

No, I dont. At DH, yes. At catcher, no. The problem is, they already have a first baseman, so he cant go there and he isnt athletic enough to play the outfield.

It hasn't happened yet and unless Martin somehow de-ages 5 years he's not going to block Jesus.

I am not saying he will be blocked for multiple years. But he would be "blocked" from getting full time at bats that the NY newspapers have been writing about for weeks.

skrip

If he performs he can get any AB's that he loses to Martin at DH.

Yeah, Grienke said that two weeks after he said he wouldn't want to go to a big market because of his stress disorder.

Now that's something thats going to make a team trade for you!

If the Yankees sign Martin then they are worried about Montero. Simple as that. I cannot blame them, even though his MiLB states look good. All of you that think defense at catcher doesn't matter are dreaming. If Boston signs Crawford, they'll have plenty of speed to attack their opponents with and the Rays will still have plenty of guys that will steal a bag. New York knows they need a good defensive catcher for the playoffs because allowing an automatic double on every single or walk is death in postseason baseball when you face good pitching.

So what are the odds Montero will be playing somewhere other than the Bronx by the end of this season?
