Zimmerman is basically saying you are going to play for a bottom of the barrel team no matter what. Why not pick your poison now instead of losing value down the road.

Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman doesn't understand the reasoning behind top pick Stephen Strasburg's holdout.
Strasburg, the No. 1 pick in June's first-year player draft, reportedly rejected a record-breaking offer from the Nationals last week. "I don't understand what he thinks will be better next year," said Zimmerman. "If we don't take him, who's gonna take him next year? Pittsburgh? San Diego? San Diego is not gonna pay him more. Absolutely his leverage will never be higher." The deadline to sign draft picks is Monday, August 17 at 12:01am EST.

Zim is right. In my opinion it is time for MLB to put a salary cap on all incoming draft picks. This way it is take it or leave it and then once these prospects prove themselves then they can make their money. No rookie is worth 50 million.

No need for a cap if guys sign for 1k. If there is a signing cap there needs to be a floor also for draftees.

I'm not sure why people care what teams spend. It's not money out of our pockets. It's coming from the pockets of a sport that has doubled it's revenue in the last decade. The owners are making money. It's about time they spend it.

I mean for the people that hold out this long makes me sick. Take for example the first overall pick. He gets 10 million with the salary cap over 3 years. If you do not take the set amount, you don't play! End of story. These greedy prospects need to earn their living instead of getting a ridiculous amount of money to start.

Why does it matter? The league is making a billion a year. Why have disdain for a guy getting all he can when you pay 8 bucks for a beer at a game, 4.00 for a hotdog, and on and on.

I say it's their one chance to set themselves and their family up. They are doing what any business person would do. It's a business and they are doing their due diligence.

It is a business, but enough is enough. They hold out and wait to see what this guy and that guy makes. If their were set salary caps, it was save the team and their franchises money. It won't be a secret to any incoming draftee on what he is going to make. If you do not like the price as an incoming draftee, then you don't have to play. You can hold out, but if you are chosen #1 the following year, you will make the same amount as you would have the year before.

So you are more pro-company than worker?

If the teams make it to where the middle income people can take their kids to a game, set in decent seats, and show them a good time without having to set in the nose bleeds, then I'd agree. Until then, the teams give up nothing. There is no reason for labor to give up anything.

I don't know why people side with the teams when it comes to money.

Because it is the right thing to do. I am not saying that these draftees will not make their money. I am saying that you start a guy out low and then pay him high later on. Once he has proven himself, then you sign him to a crazy contract. You don't give him a bizarre contract now. These young kids make more than some 10 year veterans of the game which is a little nuts.

The drafts are set up to keep prices low. If there wasn't a draft, these guys would all go to the highest bidder. You'd see contracts increase if there was not a draft. It's the league's way to control prices. If that's not good enough, then I don't know what is.

I dont think thats really his point and I tend to agree with him. Your right, it is a business but all this garbage with hold outs and guys saying I will never play for you, etc, is just plain stupid.

Plus what Zimmerman said, makes sense. Pick your posion, either way you will be playing for a bad team.

I'm not saying that there would be no draft, but a cap would control the prices. There would be no bidding going on here. Lets say Strasburg does get his 50 mil contract for example, how is that low? The prices do not seem low in my book.

I just explained how it keeps prices low. Whether it is low in your book or my book doesn't matter. The teams, in general are making money, and a lot of it.

50 million is a number that is speculative at best. We don't know the numbers they want and 50 million is a way to convince people that it is too much.

I haven't seen any complaints about 60 million signing bonuses for nfl players come from your direction. What's the difference?

I don't like that fact that it happens in the NFL either, but that is excatly my problem. I am a baseball fan, but now that you think of it isn't good there either. If you had caps it would work the same way. Look at how many people have gotten these huge signing bonuses and flunked. Matt Bush, Brian Bullington, Ryan Harvey, just to name a few. These guys as I have said over and over again are not worth all of this money. If for NFL players there would be caps to and after a season or to then you pony up.

look at the NBA they have a cap for draft picks. it has worked great. i am tired of rookies getting paid more than proven all stars. its just stupid. its like saying i would take some rookie over a young proven player. zimm has the right idea. all Straburg not signing would do for him would waste his careere. look at JD Drew. the players are worse of coming for independante ball then college.

i wasnt thinking. i was comparing boras client to borass client. buy look at crow this year. he droped in the draft. what i was saying is that the coaching in independant ball is worse than college there for hurting the players career.

I think Crow grew up a Royals fan, and the Royals are set up far better than the Nats are for the long haul. I think he did the right thing ultimately.
