Everyone n '89 wanted and/or had a Fleer Bo Jackson. How many '09 cards do all kids want and/or have?? There are too many choices today, they all seem meaningless to kids.

I don't know why you guys are so against the hobby as it is now. I can do FAR more with $20 now than I could when I was a kid buying 1989 Fleer Bo Jacksons. Just because you let the hobby get the best of you, doesn't mean kids can't enjoy it. Kids still buy and love baseball cards.

What is this 1989 Fleer Bo Jackson you all are talking about? The only Bo Jackson card i can remember that "everyone" wanted was his 1990 Score not 1989 Fleer. I guess that card wasn't very "ionic" to you two, you guys can't even remember what set or even what decade the card was made  :)

There is a score card I think from 1990 or 1989 where he is holding a bat in his hands but also has shoulder pads on.I could swear the border was purple?

That is from the 1989 Score Football Update. (home of the Mike Golic rookie card!) I can dig out for a scan later.[/quote:3pq88pky]

Oh...I have one.I just don't feel like scanning it.I think I got it for like 10 cents a couple of years back.

And to all those saying the Bo's were not a hot commodity...they were.Of course that was back when you could get $5 or $10 for a base card.

I just saw this 1990 Score Bo card sell at auction for over $5. I regularly see the 1989 Score Football black/white Bo card sell for in between $5-$10 and I just saw two 1987 Classic Bos sell for $33 at auction.

Guys, I only brought up the 1989 Fleer Bo Jackson because it was one of the first cards I ever purchased. I never said it was iconic. I was commenting on how much more I can get with $20 today than I could then. The hobby is just fine, it's you that have changed. Sure, the hobby was DIFFERENT then, but it is alive and kicking. It's not a kids hobby anymore, but kids can enjoy it just the same. Like I said, a kid can do more with $20 today than they could have in 1989. The hobby has simply evolved, as expected. Some of us are no longer kids, but that doesn't mean kids don't enjoy the hobby just as much as we did when we were their age. Basically, what you are trying to say is, "Kids now days don't enjoy the hobby like I did when I was a kid." And how would you know that???

A kid may have more options than 25 years ago but I don't think he can "do more" with $20. In 1985 I could buy 40 packs of the most current cards on the market. 40 packs!! A kid could, in theory, go on Ebay today and buy a crap load of 1988 Donruss for $20 if he wanted to but it just isn't the same.
In 1989 $1.25 could get you a pack of the hottest cards on earth, today you can't sniff a "good" pack for under what, $3-$5?

The hobby I knew in 1986 is dead. This isn't just an opinion by some over 30 guy who longs for the old days. The hobby morphed and changed into something so unlike what it was that it actually killed it and replaced it with what we see now, 12 year olds doing Youtube box breaks with $1000 worth of chrome crap in the hopes of sending a couple pieces into a third party who will then grade them 9.5 so he can flip it for a profit.

It isn't a hobby if you prospect, it's a business.

I think you put too much "stock" into the investment aspect of the hobby (pun intended). Just because you see kids posting their breaks on YouTube means they are not enjoying the hobby? And what about all the kids who don't post there and just love the cards they get and trade with their friends and go to shows and shops? It's a jaded way to see the hobby. Just because you think it's so different, doesn't mean it is to everyone else in the world. I would rather be a kid in the hobby today than when I was younger. I wish I had eBay and online resources to get whatever I wanted. Sure, it was more "innocent" then, but I would enjoy it now just the same... and DO. I buy the cards I couldn't afford then for pennies... what's not to love about that.

I'm sure somewhere there are still kids enjoying actually collecting cards. I'm sure somewhere, some place, there is a (1) kid that still attempts to trade cards. The "hobby" might be great for you now that you can buy the cards you couldn't afford then, but you are no longer a kid. My way of seeing the "hobby" is not jaded at all, it is realistic. I remember sitting in my living room sorting thru over 700 1987 Topps while putting them in order so I could make a checklist. Do you think kids still do this? The answer to this is no; back in the pre 1990's EVERY kid did this.

Hell, even the quality of the card sucks now. The high water mark was 1984 Donruss and 1989 UD, everything since then has sucked! Every now and then a company has put out something great (1996 Select Certified Mirrors), but they are far and few between. We live in a card collecting world that is so starved for decent baseball cards that people actually go nuts for something as ugly as a Topps chrome...ugly as hell with terrible photos. Most of the patch cards are now being faked and autographed stickers are being placed upside down and crooked on cards!! That sucks!

I may be somewhat jaded but you are delusional. Start a poll asking who here thinks card collecting is better now for kids than it was 20-30 years ago and see what you get.

Seems like you simply hate being a grown up and hate when other people say they enjoy the hobby. I enjoy it, I have seen younger kids enjoy it. You keep spouting all the stuff you love and hate, fortunately the hobby doesn't consist of just you. No need to throw hate my way because you are a crotchety old timer who still can't understand why packs of cards aren't the same price they were 20 years ago. If you want to buy $1 packs, BUY $1 PACKS. I don't need to start a poll, because 99% of the people here enjoy our hobby. Sounds to me like you need to find a new one.

Edit - You simply stating that kids no longer enjoy collecting baseball cards is in no way proof.

They can be had way cheaper. Its why I say ebay is not a good determining factor of what cards always sell for.Go to any flea market and you can snag these for next to nothing all day long.I am still waiting on the guy I picked up my stuff from to look through his stuff again because if I remember correctly there was another guy here who wanted one.

I don't hang at many shops or shows, but whenever I have been around them, I have seen kids. Sure there are not as many as in the past, but to say they don't enjoy it like we did is just stupid and speculative. How the heck would any of us know how much kids enjoy collecting baseball cards???

It's not speculative or stupid, its a FACT.

I have been frequenting shows and shops regularly for over 20 years, and 15 years ago 50% or more of the people I would see at these locations were 16 or younger. Today, I'd questimate 90% or more are adults. Sure, it's not a scientific expierament with exact calculations, but it is a true representation of the state of the hobby point of fact.

I am 100% confident that kids these days do not enjoy card collecting like they once did. To even argue anything other is fruitless. And anyone who has been active in the hobby for ~20 years or longer will know this.

This is not to say that kids that do partake are enjoying it less, but that less kids are partaking and thus kids(as a whole) are enjoying it less.

I have agreed that there are less kids collecting these days, but to say the ones that do collect enjoy it less than we did is ridiculous and you can't prove it.

I may be in the minority, but is it really a bad thing that kids are less into the hobby than before? The hobby has just changed; fewer collectors are spending more on cards but the products are constantly evolving. Kids can still enjoy little league, go to game with their parents etc. I guess I just don't see what the big deal is

Look man...I am simply telling you I never see kids at a shop.I never do.Its always guys who are 20+ years in age or older.Always.Back when I was a kid(back in the late 80's and early 90's) everyone collected baseball cards and by everyone I mean every single kid I knew. When I got a little older everyone kinda migrated over to basketball for some weird reason.I met up with friends I hadn't seen in a few years because I had changed schools and even they were collecting basketball now.It was nuts. But it finally died off in the late 90's.The only cards that were collected much then were Magic the Gathering and that was mostly a dork kinda thing.(not saying I think it was dorky but that is how it was looked at by most people)

As for now...its just not the "IN" thing to do.Now its video games and CCG's like pokemon and Yughio. It just is what it is.

As for kids not enjoying collecting as much as they used to...well you tell me how the hell they could.Instead of being an against the grain kinda person try to at least be logical about this.Back in the 80's and 90's you could pull "the card to have" or really hot and popular cards from a 49 cent pack.Now...people don't even know what the hell "the card to have is" because of all the little niches and whatnot. Now they have so many different types that there really is no card to have but there are some nicer cards that are semi popular that you can own.Now...tell me how many kids(that are not walking around with money falling out of their pockets) can afford any of these.Hell...even if you want to go by beckett's standards...the hot list and whatnot, half of us can't even afford those cards. You think a kid can?

So a kid in today's hobby, unless he has a parent figure that collects and constantly helps him keep his head above the water, is left to get a couple of packs of base topps or UD at the store like Walmart or Target because any self respecting parent is not going to take them to a Hobby shop and spend $5 or more a pack when they can "get the same cards at Walmart cheaper", even though me ,you ,and that brick wall over there know that Hobby produces the hits. And since they will be buying retail and in likely limited amounts...how can they get anything popular? How can they get anything that is the cool thing to have? They can't.And to me and you the "cool thing to have" may not mean jack(I know it doesn't to me anyways) but for kids it matters.

Remember when refractors where THE insert to get? Or when printing plates were worth chasing? Or when game-used wasn't a guaranteed hit to get people to buy a box? Or when 1 per-pack ON CARD autos were all the rave? Or when the Flair Masterpiece was a TRUE 1/1?

You guys are wasting your time with this windbag. He has this idea that card collecting is somehow at its pinnacle right now because he is able to buy a card now that he wasn't years ago. He spouts off about how great kids have it now but won't back it up when the whole damn world calls him on it. He'll just say that you're jaded or an old man or say somehow you're spewing hate at him. I'm embarrassed as hell that he has a representative from my team on his avatar. You'd swear this guy is a high school kid by his posts but I think he said that he is 35 or something in another post which really adds insult to injury because he should be old enough to remember when card collecting was fun for kids and not what it is today.

Whatever you say, buddy. I find it absolutely HILARIOUS that you speak for the children of the trading card hobby of today.

Well every group has to have its advocates, like for instance, 35 year old virgins that live with their mothers...glad you're on it.

Another ZINGER! You are sure proving me wrong about the issue we were discussing before we were so rudely interupted by your childish insults. :D

Come on guys. :(

I am sure he has his own theories but I am sure, if he would just respond to what has been written, we can all at least agree its harder for a kid to feel like they belong in this hobby. And when that happens they go looking for something else. Not all kids. But most of them.
