I disagree. And this guy sums it up pretty good why...

I disagree, and think you are missing the point to a considerable degree.flightposite said:I also see a statement in this thread that I always disagree with. Minnesota has one of the best followings on cardboards. His rookies will see small increases at first if he were to sign with a NY or Boston, but will quickly come back down. I bring it up every time, but Johan Santana's cards are down considerable since going to NY. I'll fight the NY/Boston price increase stigma till the day I die.

When a player is dealt to NY/Boston, the biggest increase usually happens immediately after the trade, when the perception of increased investment potential combined with a small number of fans who "simply have to have the card now" cause prices to spike. When Santana was traded to the Mets, this is exactly what happened, and prices jumped to prices that were as high, if not slightly higher than they had ever been (I sold my Santana Finest Gold /100 for $515, and Ref's /1000 were getting close to $200.) This despite the fact that Santana had had a "poor" year (by his standards) and was no longer considered the undisputed best pitcher in baseball (a "title" he had for 2-3 years before.)
Still, you might argue, Santana's prices are down since he came to NY. To this I'll throw out a number of points:
1. You are comparing the prices of Santana in his 1st year in NY, with his prices at his peak in Minnesota. His last year in Minnesota his prices dropped considerably on his RC's.
2. Santana's W-L record this season (especially the first half) had people down on him, and that hurt prices.
3. You are comparing Santana on the Twins who were his "first" team (I know he was a Rule 5 signee, but he played his whole MLB career in Minnesota) with Santana, the recently signed Free Agent. Any player who leaves a team that he has had a long stay with will lose many fans when he leaves, regardless of market size. Unquestionably this will affect prices. That said, a NY is a far, far better market than Minnesota all other things being equal. This is not one of those cases. Still, a move to NY, if he stays a long time, should provide far more market potential than Minnesota in the form of way more exposure, way more fans, and way more opportunity potential (Sunday Night baseball, Playoff baseball etc.)
I try to keep an open mind when it comes to investing as I know that there is a lot I don't know. That said, I am pretty confident about this, and have not seen any market evidence that supports your claim.
You've sold numerous copies, so you definitely remember how the Finest Gold Ref's had dropped considerably during his final season in Minnesota.flightposite said:As someone who has bought and sold probably double digit Santana gold refractor rcs, I firmly stand by my statements. Also, you talk about Santana having a down year (you did say for him), but was he or was he not still in the Cy Young discussion (wasn't a front runner, but he was in the discussion)?

He completely ignores the PR nightmare that would result. From a business perspective they have to sign him because the hit they would take if they don't outweighs the money hit they would take for signing him. Whether he is worth the money isn't relevant to 95% of Twins fans.

As for his being in the Cy Young discussion, living in NY I can tell you that after his "slow" start, people were not quick to warm up to him.
My statements are not being made on the basis of a single player, but more of years and years of study of the entire market. I can give you examples that support every statement I made in the last post.
