When making your singles buying collection (for your collection, not for flipping/prospecting purposes), which sucks you in more... The scarcity of a card, the value a card has, or just how damn good it looks; and can you keep an independent view of looks where value is concerned? (As a valuable card can often look great to people simply because it is valuable).

I would have to go with looks/value because, like you said, the more valuable a card is the better it looks in my eyes.

I picked Value because I love highend cards, but If it doesn't look good I'm not buying it. I have noticed buying highend cuts Its alot harder to find nice cards because not only are you looking for a nice card but a nice cut to.

I voted looks, but its close with Scarcity for me personally. But if two really rare cards came up, and card 1 was 500 & rarer, and card 2 was 700 less rare, but looks better, you know I'm going after card 2 if the funds aren't available for both

Great question, I had a hard time coming up with one answer because looks is very important to me but if it is a low end card or not scarce I may pass on it until another time if the price is not right. But if it is a scarce card I will not pass on it as it may not come up again or at least not for a long time so I picked Scarcity.

I'm not quite sure.

It sort of depends on the player first. If it's a player I like, I have some process of determining if I like the card or not. Depends on value, looks, and rarity.

That's tough because with completists it's everything. At this point I put scarcity over looks, and value is dead last. Although with looks I have already compiled most of things I like, such as gold refractors, Elite parallels, Turkey Red parallels, Finest, etc. So for those I am just looking for scarcer items.

i voted looks because there are some scarce cards, plates, that i would never purchase. also scarcity can hunder the activity of a specific card. example, orange ref are more scarce but the blue ref looks better and prob have a better roi.

Bo - using your three variables, I'd say my rough formula is:

scarcity + looks = value

At least as far as "value" translates to "what am I willing to pay for it."

There is tons of Hanley stuff out there, so I just pick what I think looks good to go after first.

I say scarcity.I think a lot of you as well as a lot of the hobby undermine scarcity.Take plates for example...sure they are not the most asthetically pleasing but they are what they are which is scarce. For me...scarcity is a blessing and a curse. Its a blessing when you pull or are able to purchase a rare card because your either the only person or one of the few people who are able to own it.For me...you can't really beat that using any other facet of the hobby. The curse part is...if I have something that is numbered to 1...there are no other people who can own it.It can really suck if your a player collector because it may mean a few of the cards you own nobody else will own and vice versa. But its cool to look through my cards and know...nobody else can own this card or only 5 other people can own this or whatever. Its cool to know you own something that there may only be 1 or a few of in the entire world. For me...that takes the cake hands down!

Looks, hands down. I don't give a damn about scarcity or value.

Hell, I'd rather have Superfractors and MLB logos numbered to 50 so they wouldn't be so damned expensive

For me it is looks. For example I will not buy sticker autos. Which pains me when I see a highend patch card with a sticker auto, but it is how I roll. On a side note I think down the road sticker autos may not hold there value quite as much as on card.
