I have a bunch of SB Coa's, as I always file the original COA & replace with my own when I buy autos off the public. I'll try to remember to scan & post some in this thread...

Also, they had a big problem with fake autos because scammers would buy the real auto from QVC, and the real cert, then "return" a fake item and QVC would still take it back. The scammer would get the money back for the "return", not send the cert or the real item and QVC would just re-sell it without realizing what happened.

Pretty much anything Goldin's son touched turned out bad or to be fake. Ugh.

Yup thats why I cringe when I hear people say "it has to be real I bought it from qvc or enter store here". Most rightfully assume they must be legit then, but the scammers where like 4 steps ahead at that point.

I have been at Rays Fanfests in the past, watch Carl Crawford sign a ball for a guy who I was behind, the guy then swaps out the item with another ball on the way to the authentication line , gets in the MLB authentication line, and has the ball that was not signed by Carl Crawford that day authenticated by MLB.

I bought this the other day. I've seen a handful of these on ebay over the years and finally picked one up. The auto looks legit to me. I was wondering, the original post says to stay away from coa's with Ken Goldin's signature, does anyone know if they faked Griffey items?

To the best of my knowledge Ken Goldin himself was never implicated in any counterfeiting scams. I think the issue was others counterfeiting Goldin's stuff & using his name & coa's.

The Griffey card in question is legit & was sold on QVC by Goldin himself.

The problem with the son's COA's after 1995 is that is when they started to accept items from signings without a Scoreboard employee present.

Thanks for the replies, I wasn't doing too much collecting back in the mid-late 90's so I'm out of the loop on the counterfeiting and scams from then.

I know this post is a year old but I came across a scoreboard auto that my dad bought in the early 1990s. He bought a signed Ewing jersey. The Coa is from Paul the auto looks pretty good anyone know anything about Ewing and scoreboard

Thanks

Add another thanks to the OP.
I can't believe I missed this thread the first time around. Very enlightening.
I own a few items with Scoreboard COA's.
Only 2 of them are the Paul Goldin COA's with the rest being Ken Goldin.
I have 2 Nolan Ryan auto'd baseballs, one with a "Paul" COA and one with a "Ken" COA. Ironically I couldn't tell which COA belongs with which ball.
The other "Paul" COA item I have is a Juan Gonzalez auto'd 1993 Black and Orange stitching All-Star Game baseball.
Almost every Scoreboard item I have came originally from Scoreboard as I pulled redemption cards from Scoreboard/Classic packs of cards.
And before anyone chimes in.....yes I could kick myself in the ssa for buying as much of that crap as I did.
Anyone collect phone cards? If so, I'm your man!
It's killed me to hear over the years how all Scoreboard COA's are fakes.
Thanks again to the OP and the person who bumped this thread up.

You think it's bad opening that stuff then, try opening it now. Over the last couple or year I pick up boxes when I find them cheap. Pulled this last year, just about 15 years too late:

You can also do this at Tristar all day long. Its another reason that if you buy anything authenticated from Tristar...it needs to be directly from them. It can't be from Joe Blow on ebay because their authentication is about as worthless as the day is long when it comes to buying it second hand. Easiest way to do it would be to have them authenticate it at the actual table the signing happens but I suppose it would hold the line up.

I only have owned a few actual scoreboard items(aside from cards) that have been signed. One was a Troy Aikmen helmet that I traded away for a slew of cards and the other is a Jerry Stackhouse signed 8x10. I don't think either of them were faked.

I missed this the first time too. I have a Barry Bonds Scoreboard auto'd mini-bat. I suspect that it is authentic from this thread. I also have a Lenny Dykstra auto'd bat somewhere arond here too from Scoreboard.

You would have still been waiting for that redemption to come through today, even if you sent it in back in 1994.

I've got a Wayne Gretzky Autographed card that I bought from Scoreboard in the early 90's I believe it was and I was just wondering if you guys thought it was real or fake. I remember going to the Scoreboard warehouse in Cherry Hill with my dad when I was really young and getting it. It's numbered 750/999 and the COA is in the case with the card. Here's an actual picture of the card front and back. Thanks!
