lately it seems ive seen a spate of cards with screwdown damage and even got some that became eventually scathed in the mail. you see the game used card too thick for a standard screwdown yet, happily and tightly screwed in by its previous owner. or the regular card snuggly in an old 4 screw holder without a sleeve and without a recessed area. god forbid you see the dreaded watery look on the surface, usually around the edges. as you unscrew as carefully and slowly as you can, hoping it was just put in yesterday and not a year ago, you say **** it, i need to free this card even knowing what might happen. so it happens. and you are pissed. we all are.

how do i prevent this you ask. do i find a sauna and slowly open it in there. or do i turn the screw 1 degree every day for 360 days. no, stop using ******* screw downs. but its not the screwdowns you say. then kill those people who squeezed these cards into screw downs.

now for the fugly

kruk cards listed the entire set a while back all with screwdown damage, but oddly save for the ichiro

Thankfully I have nothing to add to this thread picture wise.

But yeah, that is not good at all.......

Second card looks familiar, as does the damage :)

I'm pretty sure that's who I got mine from, in the same shape.

Nm/Mt some color has rubbed off of the corners ::facepalm::

seriously though, a screw down damaged 1 card in my collection (2004 sp top prospects ryan/guerrero/trumbo triple auto)...took a little bit of the surface off of the back by where the screw was. needless to say, i now have a shoebox of empty screwdowns in the closet.

Agree 100%. I kept my first 100 or so heritage autos in magnetics, but those get heavy. I keep my nighest end cards in penny sleeves, toploaders and individual team bags, the exact same way I keep the lowest end Heritage cards that are in my collection (down to chromes.)

I'll add these to the list.

You'd be surprised what the Rolen and Vina go for - impossible cards and a real shame they are beat up. Still glad to have all of them.

The horror stories can be easily averted with responsible, and inept-less maintenance.

-Keep card displaying to a minimum.
-Only tighten the screw-down until "normal" force can no longer tighten the case.
-"air out" screwed-down cards at least once a month; wipe inside screw-down with cloth.

Or

-Stop buying screw-downs, and switch to magnetic holders: same maintenance applies.

+ team bags. im obsessed with team bags as they keep dirt and debris out of the top of the toploader

same here. even sweet spot autos, ultro pro long has had super wide sleeves + super thick toploaders + team bags (i had to use a brand other than ultra pro to fit the super thick toploaders or i use graded card sleeves)

I had all my PC HOF autos in screw downs... Couple of months ago I put them all in sleeves and toploads.
Now I hope time and the penny sleeve dont play with the autos.....

ive never heard of the sleeve damaging a card (unless its carelessly put in and lifts a corner  ) although im slightly worried cause every once in a while you'll see a sleeve that looks oily or filmy????

If I remember right, some of the old card sleeves were made with a material that ended up sticking to some of the gloss material used on cards. This was fixed I believe in the early 90's but some of the early sleeves and 9 page holders had this problem.

I saw a lot of it when I was pulling my early McGwire collection from binders.

I've been adding the team bag since 2006, simple math, team bags are cheaper than top loaders. I hate nice cards in scratchy top loads.
