NOTE: I started this on another board on 4/16, but I love this forum also, so I figured I would have you all join in on the fun too.

So, last year about this time, I did a flip to go from a 1989 Fleer baseball card set all the way up to a 1999 Topps Traded Josh Hamilton rookie autograph. It took 5 weeks! You do read ALL my threads, right? :)

Cliff's notes: It was a blast, and it took about 5 weeks. Plus, I got some cool extras!

I remember having so much fun with it, but I've been busy with making custom cards. Plus, I don't really want to spend all this time buying/selling/trading to get something insane for my PC. I don't ever keep anything that is worth hundreds of dollars in my PC.

On top of that, I've been uninspired as to what to start with. A red paper clip? Been done. Fleer set? Yeah, last year.

I GOT IT!!!! What about a BOX full of stars/rookies/inserts? That'd be cool!

Ehhh, no it wouldn't.

So then, a light bulb went on ....What if I started with a custom? People seem to like them, and I've been itching to do this:

a 1989 Upper Deck Star Rookie of Yasiel Puig! Honestly, since these are custom art pieces, it really could be of anyone.

There is my starting point! The twist is that I will make one with your own custom writing. We can say something about you, your kid, etc. And, it really can be of any player you like. These would be GREAT for TTM / IP autographs.

So the end result? Well, I don't have one. I've already accomplished going from a $5-10 set to a $250 card. Instead, I want to see how much and how big I can get by the end of the regular season. I think this can be mega fun.

I'm gonna set my sights high, and see if I can end up getting a house or yacht or something, when all is said and done. Or maybe at least a nice small collection of PC stuff. I'll record every transaction right here.

RULES
- I will trade off as many of the custom 89 UD style art type cards to see what I can get off of them, looking for a sell value of $20-30 per custom traded.
- I will also trade/sell off whatever I get for them.
- The game is over at the end of the A's season. If they don't hit the post season, the last day is it. If they make it to game 7 of the world series, then that marks the end of the flip quest.

So, who wants a custom 89 UD art card ? :) Shoot me a trade offer!

Here are the cards I have traded for either for a custom, cards I traded a custom for, or a combination. What I have available is shown above in the deal tracker, but I wanted to show what has been done so far. It has been great, and I can't wait to see what the end of the season looks like. Everyone I have traded with has been AWESOME. About half of the folks have even sent over some freebies ... thanks, guys!

Here is what simplified explanation of it all: I'm trading an 89 Upper Deck style custom card of the player of YOUR choice for $20-30 sell value worth of card(s). I am also trading/selling the cards I have already traded for that are under the "DEAL TRACKER" in the initial post. I just posted the pictures of the cards I have gotten in deals already. I have since cashed out, so I am looking to re-invest the $226.21 I've received from them into more cards to do deals with

Im having trouble as well understanding what it is you're doing/wanting. Maybe a little more explanation could be given. I see there are lots of readers of the thread but I dont think the explanation is clear.

I'm sorry for the confusion - here is the deal:

I'm trading an 89 Upper Deck style custom card of the player of YOUR choice for $20-30 sell value worth of card(s). I am also trading/selling the cards I have already traded for that are under the "DEAL TRACKER" in the initial post. I just posted the pictures of the cards I have gotten in deals already. Ok, I get the trading a custom card for $20-$30 value in cards you can sell.

So, I send you $30 in trade value in cards, you send me a custom card (whom ever), no real cash exchanges.

You then put the $30 in trade value cards that I sent you either up on a transaction forum/ebay/where ever you can sell them to cash out? or is there we are loosing what it is your're wanting to do?

You have the gist of it correct - I don't just cash out. I also take the cards I get in trade to trade as well. Actually, I prefer trading, as that is much more fun for me. At the end of the season, I'd like to see what I end up with!

The pics of cards in post #1 (not the Puig's), they traded to you for a custom card, correct?

Where are those cards now? Traded away or sold?

Plus, where did the $226.21 come from and how does it play in?

As you can tell, I'm still a little not sure what you're trying to do/want.

Forgive my ignorance,

No problem, Fordman! I have this posted on other forums and it garnered a lot of interest, but I think the other forums are more used to what flip quests are. (I coined the phrase afaik, but these types of quests have been going on for quite some time).

The pics in the first post are trades that I received from making a custom 89 Upper Deck style card for people, or I received them by trading the cards that I received from making a custom 89 Upper Deck style card for people. All the cards in the pics are gone because I sold them. Cumulatively, the amount came out to be $226.21. I haven't re-invested yet, and it has been 2-3 days ... and it is driving me nuts. I'm ready to do some more deals! :)

To give you a working example, someone who is a big fan of Votto and the Toddfather traded a number of cards for 2 customs - with areas that they could be autographed whenever they go to the next Reds game, or send TTM. That way, they can have two truly nice custom pieces that you won't find anywhere else.
Let me know if you have any other questions, or need anymore clarification.

dude do u think you could make a fake 89 griffey

You betcha - just come around the back after hours and ask for Fast Eddie ... he'll hook you up! :D

In all seriousness though - I will not recreate any "real" cards for fear of them getting into the market and being used as forgeries. These cards look way too close to the real thing. I will, however, make a Griffey with a different picture!

Sorry for being in the dark, but I'm still scratching my head a little.

You take in trade cards with a value of $30. You send the custom to the sender of the $30 worth of trade cards.

You then sell for cash to buy what you want for your collection?

What if you cant sell what you have taken in trade? Are you stuck with it or do you hold it, sell/trade at a later time?

Im just curious why you just dont sell the custom cards outright and buy what you want?

Again, sorry for my ignorance,

Haha, no worries! The point here isn't to make money. It is just to see how many cool cards I can get at the end of the season. Think of this as a game, instead of an income generator. Have you ever heard of the red paper clip story? If not, you should check it out. A guy took a red paper clip, traded for something a little better, then traded that for something a little better, etc. He ended up with a house! It was really cool - he wrote a book about it and such.

My main purpose is to trade, and not sell - but when selling, the only reason would be to get more cards to trade/sell. At the end of the season, we'll see where everything is.

The bottom line is that this is just a fun little game that will get me into trading more.

They grade those "test proofs" with no autograph that keep popping up.I would love to see what a Griffey would look like.

The red paperclip is an interesting story. Someone tried that on another site I was using and it just kind of fizzled. I tried to give him some decent value in a trade, but I don't think he was able to capitalize. I think the key is that you either have to be extremely lucky or good at negotiating. I assume it spurred that pawn shop show where the guys decide what they want, set the goal and start trading up from something small. Of course, they always seem to find someone more than willing to give them a HUGE value advantage along the way.

Good luck. It will be interesting to follow.
