I don't see this anywhere else on the baseball board. What if the baseball people want to know and they aren't on the football board to see the news.

Anyway, is there some kind of conspiracy happening with the major sports against trading cards??? Why are they needlessly putting people out of jobs in this economy??? This is kind of outrageous. Do they not realize that people need and want choices? Do they not realize that Upper Deck creates jobs and that tanking their company is costing Americans jobs??? Do they not care that those who own/run card shops need product to sell and that not everyone wants only Topps for baseball, Panini for football and Upper Deck for hockey? This is crazy.

I know it is the football boards but I didn't see it on the baseball boards.I thought it was an important topic for the hobby not just baseball.

It looks as if the unscrupulous practices of Upper Deck have finally caught up with them. I wouldn't be surprised to see UD out of business soon (or bought by one of the other card manufacturers).

Not saying that UD/McWilliam didn't do this to themselves, but they put out the best looking high-end cards in the hobby, period.

UD going out of out baseball, and now football means less choice for collectors, less sets per year, less business for already
hurting hobby shop owners, distributors, online sellers, show sellers, etc, etc.

I usually try to be optimistic about all this, but even I am beginning to feel that this hobby is headed for a really ****** time.

Is Topps suddenly going to start making SPA, SPX, Sweet Spot, Ultimate Collection?

My read as well.

I look at fewer releases, within reason, as a good thing. Too much stuff, especially obscure stuff, makes all of it seem unimportant...and cheap. The hobby can definitely thrive with just a handful of good releases every year, keeping track of all releases should not be overwhelming to anyone looking to enter the hobby.

With no UD or Topps for NFL it means no set builder products what so ever. That is a big negative for me.

I've grown really tired of hearing the too many products/overwhelming/confusing BS.

You don't have to buy every product made by every company.

The loss of UD for baseball and football is and will continue to be a devastating blow to high-end collectors.

Taking jobs from Americans and giving business only to a European company (NBA & NFL) seems kind of outrageous in this economical climate. And we wonder why our economy is tanking.

I get the same feeling. Seems like we're coming to a time where the LCS is economically infeasible and the only place to get cards is online. Just about a year ago we had two companies in baseball, three in football, two in basketball and the only exclusive is hockey. Now baseball is exclusive, football is exclusive, basketball is exclusive and hockey is the only sport with two companies. What a horrible mess.

The LCS has been trending toward nearly impossible for a while now. Places with warehouses and the ability to do their business entirely online no matter what will provide significantly better prices than brick and mortar shops with high rent and high replacement costs, and this has been happening over the past 5-10 years. If you can get something for 10%+ cheaper online, almost everyone is going to do it, even if they really want to support their local shop. People can also find singles for much better prices on places like ebay than at local shops, and that is something that was a huge part of the local business, at least at the places around me when I was a child.

That's all understood, but how are places like Atlanta, D&A, and blowout supposed to survive with 50% less product to sell for each sport?

Or are we going to get MASSIVE overproduction now from each of the exclusive companies?

Combination of increased production, as well as finding ways to cut costs. It probably will result in physical location changes or job cuts. I really wouldn't be surprised at if some point over the next decade, Topps or UD started selling wax straight to customers. I don't think it will happen, but it just seems to be what we are trending towards.

Vintage - the fine wine and precious metals of card collecting. Get on board now, because it's becoming abundantly clear the major sports are going to decimate this current hobby with bad decisions. Get on board the vintage train!
